Yesterday, film professionals, students, and cinephiles from all over Mumbai gathered to experience the short film 'Bleat!' (dir. @ananthsubra) and the animated feature 'Schirkoa:In Lies We Trust' (dir. @_ishan_shukla) on the big screen as part of the MAMI Independent free weekly screening programme.

Spanning different worlds, aesthetics, and modes of storytelling, both films push the language of cinema in unexpected directions and have found acclaim at festivals far and wide. Making its premiere in Mumbai, ‘Schirkoa’ is the first animated feature film to be shown through the platform.

A Q&A session followed the feature film screening, where Shukla spoke to the audience about his two-decades-long journey of crafting the world of 'Schirkoa' and ‘Konthaqa’, the animation process, working with prominent voice actors, and more.

MAMI Independent is excited to present the animated debut feature film ‘Schirkoa: In Lies We Trust’ on Wednesday, 13th May 2026 at PVR Lido, Juhu at 7pm!

In a dystopian world where people are forced to wear paper bags over their heads, a newly appointed council member sparks an accidental revolution.

The film was part of the Bright Future Section at the 53rd International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Ishan Shukla is an Indian filmmaker who worked in the Singaporean animation industry. He directed ‘The Bandits of Golak’, one of the nine short stories from the Lucasfilm anthology series Star Wars: Visions Volume 2.

The film will be introduced by the filmmaker, followed by a post-screening Q&A session.

Entry is free, and managed via queue on a first-come, first-served basis.

Which other Academy Awards nominations do you look out for except the ones related to the Best Picture?

It is not a matter to point fingers. But we must definitely reflect on how much effect marketing has in getting a piece of art to reach people.

Creators with scant funds, isolated or no theatrical releases and speeches made only in the press rooms almost never get the spotlight from the masses.

Most of the times people only care when a film from their country reaches the shortlist or nominations. Even then, when Writing with Fire (@writingwithfire.film) by Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas was nominated for Documentary Feature Film in 2021, people rarely knew about it.

Let's change the "conventional" noise about Oscars in our little ways. Watch the films in all the categories (sometimes the non-features are a better respite from the mainstream noise!) and make predictions about them all!

Have you watched any animated, live action or documentary films nominated for Oscars this year? Which ones are your favourite?

Ishan Shukla is an Indian animation writer-director known for his imaginative storytelling. He gained early recognition with his short film Schirkoa, a surreal dystopian animation. It was longlisted for an Academy Award and won over 35 awards at more than 120 international film festivals. He also directed an episode titled “The Bandits of Golak” for Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Visions series on Disney+. The story blends Indian folklore with science fiction. In 2024, his debut feature film Schirkoa: In Lies We Trust premiered at prestigious International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) and won the NETPAC Award for Best Asian feature film. WHat followed was a year long global film festival tour in the most celebreated genre festivals of the world, earning him praise as an innovative storyteller. Shukla often uses modern tools like Unreal Engine to explore new possibilities in animation, demonstrating how technology and creativity can work together. He has spoken at TEDx events to share his vision, hoping to inspire others with his enthusiasm for animation. A self-confessed sci-fi geek, Ishan loves speculative fiction, detailed worldbuilding, and the kind of weird sci-fi that sparks wonder.

A cult indie animation with an unmissable dystopian pulse. Ishan Shukla walks us through Building Schirkoa — from the earliest sketches to festival circuits and beyond. A session on believing in long-haul storytelling.
