POV: Acadia National Park is your classroom 🍁 🌊 ☀️

Students in UMaine’s Ecology and Environmental Sciences program spent a weekend at the Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park investigating the environmental impact of increased foot traffic in the area

I’m very familiar with the term “rainy day plans,” but I never considered “foggy day plans” until we were at Acadia National Park back in August. Checking the weather for rain (and fog) became a very important morning ritual, and we had to pivot multiple times on this trip due to fog.

But don’t let the fog keep you from getting out. We were so glad we went to Schoodic Peninsula this day even though it was foggy. It was one of the highlights of our trip!

Featured stops in this video:
📍Schoodic Institute (small museum inside)
📍Schoodic Point
📍Sundew Trail (1.6 mile loop)
📍Musquito Harbor Brewing in Winter Harbor
📍Thirsty Whale in Bar Harbor

Save for your upcoming trip to Acadia & Bar Harbor! And follow along for more content about travel and daily life as a military family of three living in South Georgia and traveling every chance we get.

“Vacation” in Maine 🌲🌊

Okay, maybe not exactly a vacation for me. 😆 I was there to teach and lead this incredible group, but spending a week making art, exploring the coast, gathering inspiration, and creating alongside such wonderful people was pretty fabulous.

I’m so grateful to @sedonaartscenter and @jarartcat for inviting me to teach this workshop and for bringing the whole experience together. Getting to meet everyone in Maine and share this beautiful place @schoodicinst through art felt really special.

And honestly, I think we needed this. Time away from our regular routines. Time to notice things. To make things. To laugh, explore, collect little treasures, try new ideas, and be around other creative people.

I came home tired in the way you do after pouring a lot into something, but also very full of ideas. ❤️

And apparently we’re not done…

There are already more workshop adventures taking shape for 2027 and 2028. One stateside, and perhaps one that might require a passport. 👀✈️

More on those when the time is right.

For now, I’m still happily going through all these Maine memories. 🌲

Hawk Watch is in full swing! Each year, thousands of raptors and other types of birds migrate south for the winter, some even as far as South America! In this part of the world, migratory birds (and butterflies!) tend to follow the Atlantic Flyway, which acts as a highway following the east coast of North and South America. This path allows for easy travel, good food sources, and places to rest on their long journey south.

There are over 70 stations on the Atlantic Flyway that monitor and document the yearly migration numbers, including Cadillac Mountain! Every weekday starting at 9am, Schoodic Institute volunteers, Acadia's Raptor Intern (funded by Friends of Acadia), and National Park Service rangers scan the horizon for hawks, falcons, ospreys, eagles and more, documenting their daily numbers and uploading them to an international database. As only the second monitoring station along the Atlantic Flyway, all the stations south of Acadia watch the Cadillac Mountain data closely to anticipate and compare their own observations.

Hawk Watch is open to everyone! Any visitor interested in helping track this year's migration numbers is welcome to join, no sign-up required. Follow the Cadillac North Ridge trail down from the summit about 200 yards to find the monitoring station. Remember to get your vehicle reservation in advance!

We had the best time at our art retreat on the Schoodic Peninsula last week! A group of artists and artist mentors went up to Acadia National Park for inspiration and art-making. Thank you to @schoodicinst @acadianationalpark @weepyphoebe @amymulls and @braleybrian for the support and opportunity! #celebratingability #schoodicpeninsula #artretreat #intellectualdisabilities

2026 Summer Road Trip

See those dark bands of rock running through the lighter granite? Those are called dikes. They formed when molten rock pushed up into cracks in the older granite and eventually cooled and hardened. The rock that formed these dikes is dark basalt.

Schoodic Point is full of these cool geo formations, and you can walk around the shoreline and see them running through the granite in all different directions. (8/2026)

2026 Summer Road Trip!

Camping hair don't care! It was so windy out here at Schoodic Point. Views for days!!

Can we talk about this adorable dress?! It's from Amazon and it has POCKETS! 🙌 I love it. It's flowy, lightweight, and not hot, plus it works with flip-flops, sandals, or sneakers. Perfect for road-tripping and exploring!

2026 Summer Road Trip!

This was such a neat little surprise at Schoodic Institute! These tiles represent signal flags and spell out a message. Can you guess what it says?! ... When they're flipped to the other side, they spell KENDRA! This was such a fun activity.

And there's actually some pretty cool history behind the signal flags here. Schoodic was home to a U.S. Navy communications station for decades, and you can still see pieces of that history around the site. There are old radios, maps, alarms, and other hands-on displays you can play and interact with to get a feel for what communication was like back then.

I love when you stumble across something fun that also lets you experience a little bit of the history of the place you're visiting! For me, it makes the learning stick better.

2026 Summer Road Trip!

On Day 4 of our road trip, we visited the Schoodic Institute on the Schoodic Peninsula while camping at the nearby campground.

Schoodic Institute is Acadia National Park’s primary partner in science and education, supporting research, conservation, and educational programs throughout the park. It's a pretty neat place where science and the outdoors come together!

We spent about an hour here, but could have stayed longer. There are even trails nearby! Definitely worth adding to your Schoodic Peninsula stops - and don't forget to grab the neat NPS Passport cancellation!

(The building is also known as Rockefeller Hall, and it now houses the Schoodic Institute’s Rockefeller Welcome Center. It was originally built in the 1930s as part of the former Navy base on the Schoodic Peninsula.)

2026 Summer Road Trip!

I mean... WHAT A VIEW!

This is looking out the back windows at Schoodic Institute. Just beyond the patio is a little green space, then a section of trees, and beyond that is Arey Cove.

The water is hard to see in this photo, but it's this beautiful dark blue that almost blends right into the sky. The windows were open just enough for this amazing breeze to come through, the sun was sunning...

I could sit on this windowsill all day.
