POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Uni? Gap year? TAFE? Year 10-12?
Been there, done that! Here’s a little post for the next gen.

We are always navigating and that’s ok. It’s a true pleasure being able to follow what you love. Hang with those who lift you, not make you feel terrible.

Followers who have young ones, teachers or maybe this is you(!) I really hope this helps.

Send this onto someone who needs this pre back to school.

Naysayers- you were once this age! Have a lovely day!

Whale-come.

I’m excited to share that I am a “Discovery Fellow,” which is a fun title. : ) The long version is that I was selected to be part of the first National Academy of Sciences “Discovery as a Human Endeavor cohort.”

Earlier this summer, my fellow fellows and I set out for Washington, DC, to attend the 2026 Revolutions in Science symposium. As part of this pilot initiative and think tank, we were asked to explore how scientific discovery is experienced as a human endeavor, and how that shapes public connection and trust.

What I loved most about this experience was the chance to take a more poetic approach to thinking about science and discovery. 🔬✨

We were observing things like: How were uncertainty and risk presented by the scientists? Where did emotion, humor, vulnerability show up, if at all? How was all of this being communicated, and what was left out?

To me, some of the most memorable moments from the presentations were when humor and art appeared. When there was a genuine joke and real laughter, it broke through the stuffy formality, made the room feel more connected, and helped the science stick.

And I loved that someone was live sketching and creating illustrations!

(The Big Myth) In all my years of reporting health and science, one of the biggest challenges has been overcoming the misconception that science is a “perfect and definitive” process.

Because then, when more is learned and conclusions change, it can be perceived as though the earlier science “failed,” rather than the discovery of new evidence that deepens our understanding. And…people are often annoyed instead of excited 😞

(Science is Art) The one thing I wish more people knew is that science, and the process of discovery, is an art. Yes, the goal is ultimately to arrive at findings that are as objective, replicated, and as reliable as possible, based on what we know right now.
But the questions are driven by human curiosity, our understanding changes as more is discovered, and the process itself is ever-evolving. 💡

No baked beans were harmed in this science communication piece - Teachers, parents, guardians- this one is for you and your calves.

This is what came to mind when thinking about how to explain the bluebottles on the mouth of this sunfish.

Part of the Sydney Offshore Megafauna Surveys (SOMS). A partnership with the @mprg_mq at @macquarieuni, the @gamayrangers and @wildsydneyharbour.

Our trusty seahorse to get us there was @lovesydneywhales - @barefootcharter Charters with Captain @barefootcaptain.

Helping Australia learn more about its unknown blue backyard- the more we know, the more we can protect!

Why baked beans on my face? All in the name of education. Do it for the kids!

DO NOT TOUCH bluebottles!

FYI- My kids loved it!

Naysayers- have a fabulous day!!!!!!!!

@scicommexcellence #BookCamp: I’m in Santa Cruz this week for the @ucsc Schmidt Science Publishing Workshop working on the proposal for a new book.

I am here as a 2023 @thenasem (The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine) Eric and Wendy Schmidt Award for Excellence in Science Communications recipient, recognized for my work with “The Underwater.”

The book I am developing grows out of my #sociallyEngaged #art practice and the ways art can help people see what is happening around them, make meaning together, and move from awareness to participation and action.

Grateful for the time, guidance, and setting to think deeply about how to shape this work for a broader audience.

Our ECRs were on show last week at the OBVI ECR Workshop, where they had the opportunity to share their research, discuss their findings and learn from other early-career researchers working across the field. It was incredibly insightful to see the range of work being presented and the conversations that followed.

Workshops like this are a great reminder of the value of bringing young researchers together to exchange ideas, learn from one another and build connections across disciplines. It was wonderful to see our ECRs contributing to those conversations and representing their work with such enthusiasm.

This week we end the clinical trial discussion about what exactly is a clinical trial. There are observational trials which are noted as natural history studies of varied diseases and conditions - which often include enrollment of healthy volunteers. Then there are interventional treatment trials that examine short and long term side effects of the therapy for each trial participant/patient. Trials are open and available at hospitals, clinics and clinical centers - Be sure to chat with your clinical team about options for you and consider participation if it’s right for you. For those of you who have participated in a trial, how did it go? #trial #clinical #medicine #health #clinicaltrials @nihgov @nih_clinicalcenter

Australian’s gift @sharkweek more love with the discussion of ‘Sharkzilla’. Let’s clear this up with a little scicomm.

I too am in favour of a little bit of fun but this one, this calls for a WHALE WEEK - if the story lines of shark week are turning to nuclear sharks and killer whales. Im calling it!

Thank you @thesharkdoctor for being wonderful and chatting with me.

Enjoy and learn together.

Students I’m teaching, this is fresh content for class today!

Calling all aspiring science communicators in beauty! Applications for our upcoming SciComm Mentorship Cohort are now open! This is an incredible FREE opportunity to receive mentorship and support tailored specifically to SciComm in beauty. Spaces in our cohort are limited, applications close August 16th. Know anyone who might want to join in? Please share!

Link in bio to find all the details + applications!

I am so excited about what we have planned for our next cohort. Between more one-on-one time with our incredibly talented Mentorship Advisory Group, to more structured training on topics we feel are important to do SciComm in beauty well. Science communication has never been more important, yet it’s historically been under-supported in the beauty space. This is our effort to change that.

Massive thank you to our cohort advisors for contributing your time and expertise, so honored that each of you agreed to be a part of this!
