Green Chemistry in Micellar Water: From Pines to Fragrances. This post showcases our recent research featured on a Cover of Green Chemistry.

In this study, we developed a sustainable protocol for catalytic oxidation of α-pinene (one of the main components of pine oil) under aqueous micellar conditions. This approach minimizes the environmental risks associated with the use of organic solvents, creating a green platform for the oxidation of low-cost terpene hydrocarbons in water to produce value-added products with relevance in pharmaceutical, fragrance, and flavoring industries. This work is aligned with the goals of reducing waste and using renewable feedstocks.

Green Chemistry (rsc.li/greenchem) is an interdisciplinary journal published by the Royal Society of Chemistry (@RoySocChem) that is dedicated to cutting-edge research for a greener sustainable future.

Cover image shows the micellar reaction conditions, wherein a mixture of water and surfactant is used as a green medium for the synthesis of value-added products from natural hydrocarbons such as pinene. Research by “MINDlab: Molecular Design & Innovation Laboratory” (@cqelisboa, @tecnico_lisboa, @ulisboa) in collaboration with Novartis Pharma (@novartis_ch, novartis). Funded by the EU ITN project “CHAIR: C-H Activation for Industrial Renewal”.
