Software I use weekly as a Marine Biology PhD Candidate: 🌊🐢🐠🌅🔬🥼🧪👩‍🔬🧑‍🔬🧬🚨
(and recommend to learn for beginners)

- Zotero - citation manager, organizes my papers & notes. Free & has a chrome plug-in

- R & RStudio - data manipulation & plotting; map creation

- Adobe Photoshop - image annotation & manipulation for aging sea turtle bones 🐢🦴 @photoshop @photoshoptrickz

- Microsoft Office - EXCEL!!!, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, @uncwilmington is a @microsoft @microsoft365 school! It makes managing our collaborative research much easier!

- Canva & Adobe Express - creative design, fliers, social posts, etc. @canva @canvacreators @adobeexpress

Things I did in high school that prepared me for a career in 🌊 Marine Science 🌊:

🌊 participated in clubs & sports: LEO (Lions) Club, NHS, the STEM Academy, Best Buddies, basketball, volleyball

🌊 got credit as a ‘Biology Lab Aid’ to my fave teacher’s labs

🌊 volunteered & eventually interned at the National Aquarium in Baltimore

🌊 interned at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics lab

🌊 took classes such as:
Algebra, Calculus, Chemistry (1&2), Physics, Biology,
Human Anatomy & Physiology, Typing, Computer Science

🌊 also took AP classes such as: Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, & Environmental Science, but I WISH that I did DUAL ENROLLMENT at a Comm. Coll. so ALL of my credits would apply VS. possible AP credit

🌊 performed A LOT of service: camp counselor at bball camps, special Olympics, animal shelters, local Lions club (via LEO club), tutoring, etc.

🌊 applied to LOTS of scholarships my senior year & searched for colleges that had Marine Science programs. Also, searched for schools within the Academic Common Market (I got in-state tuition from MD at UofSC since MD did not have a MarSci program). I was fortunate enough to physically visit lots of schools, which helped me feel a gut-intuition of the environment. UofSC was my top choice due to the football team, MarSci program, cost, and research opportunities.

Happy MarineQuest Munchie Monday! 🐠🐟🦀🐡🪸

Every week, I volunteer with MarineQuest (MQ) at UNCW’s Center for Marine Science to perform 1 of 3 weekly feedings for their educational animals! 🐢🐠🦀🐟 @marinequestuncw @uncwilmington @uncw_bamb

I started volunteering with MQ to perform weekly animal husbandry about 2 years ago and have accrued over 75 volunteer hours. I just asked the volunteer coordinator and was hooked! Now, performing animal husbandry is one of my weekly highlights!

Who is your favorite Munchie Monday character?

This week students from UNCW’s Ramirez lab led a fish dissection outreach with Marine Quest’s (MQ) OCEANS15 program! @uncwilmington @marinequestuncw @marinequestcoastalresiliency @uncw_bamb

Graduate students and MQ sea scholars from UNCW’s Ramirez Lab led high schoolers participating in OCEANS15 through a dissection of several native North Carolina fish species. 🔬🎣🐟

We assessed fish for external morphology, species identification, gut contents, and sex identification. We also taught students what samples to collect for Age Estimation and Stable Isotope Analyses (SIA).

Taylor (a fellow PhD student) led a food web/ SIA activity with M&Ms and dragons from How to Train Your Dragon! 🐉

We shared real-world applications of these data, such as estimating a population’s age structure through aging lots of individuals’ otoliths (inner ear bones), and assessing an ecosystem’s food web and trophic positions through diet and SIA.

Students finally toured the Ramirez Lab and saw our research in action! 🦴🔬🐢🐠

Topics I would learn on my own if I were going into the marine sciences: 🐟🌊🦀🐠🐙🌅🪸🪼 Part 2

- Earth’s geologic age; characteristics of Earth’s layers; how the oceans formed; what basalt is and why oceanic crust is made of it. 🌍

- How air moves throughout the atmosphere; what Hadley cells are; what weather conditions come with these patterns. 💨🌏

- What the Coriolis effect is; how hurricanes and cyclones form and the differences between them. 🌀💨

- What counter-shading is and the benefits for camouflage; the pros and cons of various forms of camouflage and disguise. 🐟🦈🐡

- What counter-current blood flow is; how it keeps animals warm (ex. leatherback sea turtles, tuna, swordfish); what ecothermy and endothermy are- what animals have each and why. 🐬🐟

-The pros and cons of different types of animal relationships and where they’re found (ex. symbiosis, parasitism, commensalism, etc.) 🪸🦀

-Knowing what food-webs, tropic levels, and predator-prey interactions are; what bio-magnification is and the consequences of this process. 🦀🐟🦭

🙅🏽‍♀️ Debunking the BIG myth about scientific research training 🤔☝🏾

🧬EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH: How Scientists Are Trained, pt. 1 🥼 EP. 32 of @AChatWithUma is out now!

On episode 32 of @AChatWithUma, as part of the “Everything You Need to Know About Scientific Research” series, we begin a 2-part overview of the full training pipeline that researchers work through to become independent biomedical research scientists. By walking through each level of training in detail, I illustrate the skills associated with each stage of training & how scientific expertise stems from years of incremental growth.

These episodes provide a transparent guide to the foundational stages that shape both scientists’ skill sets & their dedication to rigorous, evidence-based discovery. Ultimately, these episodes serve to improve public misunderstandings & skepticism of research training & counter its resulting effects on the survival of our scientific research enterprise. Part 1 covers training stages starting from (pre)-undergraduate, & working through post-baccalaureate & technician positions through master’s programs.

Topics discussed include👇🏾

🥼Overview of the general training pipeline for scientists

🥼 How public misunderstandings of research training shape skepticism toward science

🥼 Distinguishing scientific education vs. actively “doing science”

🥼 How principal investigators guide skill-building & cultivate independence in the lab

🥼 How undergraduate research works (part-time & full-time)

🥼How post-bacc programs & technician roles bridge experience gaps before grad school

🥼 Differences & similarities between a Master’s degree vs. a PhD, & the role it may play in scientific development

🥼 Crucial skills, ethical grounding, & accessibility issues tied to early training

🥼 A look toward next week’s episode covering training through PhDs & postdoctoral fellowships, & physician-scientist & physician-specific research training steps

⚡️Full episode available EVERYWHERE now! Subscribe, rate, review, & share the podcast to support me + the show 🫶🏾

Ancient humans dating back 1.45million years could have been the first recognised cannibals, experts have claimed.

For as long as humans have had a morbid fascination, the practice of cannibalism has long been frowned upon (for good reason). However, it has long been thought that some ancient tribes took part in the practice for ritual purposes – or because they were not all there and committed a heinous crime in doing so.

But now, according to Smithsonian Institution palaeoanthropologist Briana Pobiner and Colorado State University palaeoanthropologist Michael Pante, humans have been eating each other since at least 1.45million years ago.

A study first published a year ago, but has resurfaced this week, claims that nine “cut marks” on an ancient shin bone from a left leg of someone related to Homo sapiens in northern Kenya were actually made by stone tools.
