It’s autism acceptance month and only about six months since I was diagnosed. A lot of things started to make sense when I got my diagnosis. I had assumed everyone found everything completely overwhelming. That the anxiety, anger, pain, upset, terror was something everyone felt all the time but we just didn’t talk about it. It brought some comfort to find a reason.

To be honest it might be acceptance month but I struggle with accepting it so often. A lot of the time I feel like too much and not enough all rolled into one. Occasions that other people enjoy I find so hard. I know I’m not looking you in the eye and yes, I know there’s something slightly different about the way I’m talking or acting. It can be tough to explain.

On the other hand occasionally I find something that brings me so much joy that I feel like every cell in my body is vibrating. So maybe I’ve talked at you about Mission Impossible films, or I’ve told you all about Al Pacino, maybe you’ve been lucky enough to hear me tell you every fact about Scientology or I’ve explained in excruciating detail my favourite episodes of Midsomer Murders/Inspector Morse/Murder She Wrote (and all the other detectives) - but if you’ve listened then thank you, you probably made my day.

All of these pictures are me. I sometimes feel so sad for my younger self who didn’t know what was going on. I do my best to let her feel joy wherever she needs to because she’s always been autistic and we’ve always just been trying our best.

p.s I simply can’t recommend finding someone as kind as @scottaawilson enough. He has never once made me feel anything other than completely loved. He hasn’t once rolled his eyes, tutted, told me I’m too loud/too quiet/too much/acting weird. He is kindness personified and I am luckier than I could ever put into words.
