As part of this year’s London Design Festival we’re bringing together a group of publishers, designers, historians and academics to take a fresh look at where magazines came from, and what they mean to readers in the 21st century.

Tony Quinn is author of A History of British Magazine Design. He will show how social, technological, and commercial changes shaped the thing we now know as the magazine.

Dr Sharon Maxwell Magnus is author of Feminism, UK Women’s Magazines and the Women Who Created Them. She will speak about the rise of UK women’s magazines from the 1960s to the 1990s.

Scott King was art director for i-D magazine in the late 1990s and creative director for Sleazenation in the early 2000s. In his talk he will speak about the work he did then, and how it has informed more recent projects such as The Debrist Manifesto (2021) and The New Space (2025).

Charlie Baker is editor of @thefencemag and Mathias Clottu from @studiomathiasclottu is art director. They will speak about “mining the archives”, borrowing ideas from great magazines past and using them to make a great magazine for the present.

Lucy Roeber is editor of @eroticreview and Frith Kerr from @studiofrith is art director. They will speak about designing the erotic for 2026, and the freedoms that a print magazine allows in an increasingly restrictive digital age.

Meara Sharma is senior editor of @elastic.mag. She will show how the magazine subtly subverts conventions in order to communicate an original vision of psychedelic art and literature that’s “the ordinary, only slightly, weirdly off”.

Alice Sherwin and Harry Bennett are the founders of @studiogroundfloor. They will speak about their work on @pilotmagazined, taking a conceptual approach to design ingenious and avant garde publications.

It’s all happening @stbridefoundation in partnership with @go_all_in_2026 and generously supported by @fleetstquarter.

Ten years to the day when pop up art shop Grrrr! opened its doors and let a hungry public in to see ART and things! The shop was in Malden Road, Kentish Town NW5 and was run by Siân Pattenden and Pandora Vaughan. Alongside their work, we had many artists - Cathy Ward, Scott King, Jane Hoodless, KeelerTornero, Gee Vaucher and Exitstencil Press, Nick Newsam, Joe Carcary, Tessa Norton, Claire Biddles (Grrrr! two) and the first and maybe only showing ever of Terry Hall's great artwork.
We were there for a few weeks just being ART and that's also when PROTEST BISCUITS happened, after a Brexit vote and in honour of the Rock n Roll Biscuit.
More posts to follow in the next few days.
Many hugs and much love to those that came to see the show and the workshops. Thanks to the Kentishtowner and Time Out for their support at the time.
