Surfing has always been my biggest passion. It’s also what gave me the push to try to make a living from photography.

I still remember starting out in El Palmar, buying my first Sony A7 III and water housing, and getting little waterproof cards printed. I’d swim out, photograph people surfing, and hand them a card in the water. Later, some would get in touch to buy their photos.

Little by little, those days led to an opportunity to work in the Maldives. I started photographing professional surfers, then headed to Indonesia. There were trips back and forth and surf boat trips I organised in the Maldives. Somewhere along the way, photography became my living.

It’s strange to think that today, surf photography is the work I do least. It still gives me the same feeling that made me pick up a camera in the first place.

I’m incredibly grateful for where I am today. I get to work on conservation projects, in the field I studied, surrounded by people who care about me and value my work. That means a lot to me.

And lately, I’ve felt a growing pull back to the surface. After spending so much time beneath it, I miss that thin line between the sea and the sky where surfing happens.

These photos are all more than five years old, and looking at them now, I’m still proud of the work I made back then. Now, I want to make something meaningful about the sport that has given me so much. A surf project I can put my heart into, with the patience to listen and learn, and the hope of capturing something of what keeps us coming back to the ocean.

I don’t know exactly what shape it will take yet, but I know it will happen.

It’s always hard leaving this place. Not just because it truly is paradise, but because of the people you leave behind. The bonds made over the years, the new ones formed in the water, and one of the oldest bonds and friendships I have — 33 years of brotherhood, sharing stories, trips, waves and life. All in one little clip of my last wave of the trip at sunset to close it out.

Every year we come back together and it’s like nothing has changed. Like we don’t live halfway across the planet from each other.

The last 10 days have recharged me physically and mentally. They’ve opened my eyes and given me a lot of perspective on life, where I’m at, and what really matters.

Big love to my crew @kanduivillas for the ongoing hospitality and for always making this place feel like home.

Terima kasih ❤️❤️❤️
