POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Since Spotify Wrapped dropped this week, I’m sure we’ve all been hearing about Spotify’s many negative features. Some are newer (supporting AI music), but one in particular has existed ever since Spotify began: they don’t pay artists fairly. Or, y’know, AT ALL. Say what you will about making music for self-expression and for the joy of it (which are the reasons I make it, don’t get me wrong), but I think any hardworking musician deserves to be compensated at least a little bit for their efforts, don’t you?

So, what do we do? There are certain streaming services that pay better (Tidal and QOBUZ are some of the best, I’ve heard. Planning on using today’s snow day to transfer my Spotify library to the latter). Bandcamp is a great way to support artists directly (and today is Bandcamp Friday, which means Bandcamp waives their share of any purchases made on that site today!). And personally, I’m still really into this old favorite… BUYING CDS!!

Compact discs are great to pop into your car player and listen to while driving around. The MP3’s can be ripped and added to your phone’s library for mobile listening. And I like to make it a little challenging to listen to new music. This year, I became extremely burnt out on the instant gratification aspect of streaming music. I didn’t have to go to a record store in the hopes of finding what I was looking for, or wait a week for the album to arrive in the mail. It was just there, waiting for me to click play. And that became so boring to me! Not to mention, I didn’t feel like it was something I “owned.” CDs allow me to have that experience, and to feel that anticipation of waiting to hear a newly-released album. Plus, buying from independent musicians supports them more than streaming ever will!

Here’s just a few of the CDs from local (and not-so-local) musicians that I have. I urge you all to head to Bandcamp or their websites or maybe your local record store and check them out!

Processing ‘Needs of The Narcissist’: Richmond Music Legend John Morand on His Latest ⚡️

John Morand’s story begins and currently resides in Richmond, but like the best of Hobbits and one-night stands, he’s been ‘there and back again’ many times. He’s the co-founder of Sound of Music recording studios downtown and the engineer / producer behind nearly everything good that comes from Richmond – including GWAR, Lamb of God, Inquisition, Souvenir’s Young America, Carbon Leaf, Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker, Sparklehorse – not to name drop or anything.

He, with his band, Scott’s Addiction, just dropped a new album Crushed by Covid …Songs Lost to the Virus with collaborators Keely Burn of The Tea Lights, Doc Thomas of DirtyMetalLefty, Mike Linn, Chrissie Lozano Bass of Piranha Rama, David Lowery of Cracker, Charles Nill and many others.
