Getting older means milestone anniversaries come at you fast and frequently. Today is the 25th anniversary of New End Original’s Thrilller, the first and only album we made. In honor of its birthday, here are some notes I made while revisiting the album on the plane to California, where I’m playing shows with @thursdayband this weekend.

“Lukewarm” was always @jonahmatranga’s lightning-in-a-bottle song; opening the album with it seemed like a risk. Was it too much, too soon? This now feels like the right call. Also, wow, the lyrics are *way* more relevant now than they were when we were in our late 20s.

“Hostage” is a weird as hell song! But the way it unfolds is kind of cinematic and Jonah’s lyrics are true storytelling with vivid visual imagery. It was kind of the first song I ever played on that did that.

I always wanted to play piano on a record so I arranged one of Jonah’s demos into what became “Leper Song.” It was very influenced by the pretty dissonance of Ennio Morricone’s “The Crisis.” A “real,” err, *trained* pianist once told me he loved the unconventional chord choices I made and I took that as a win.

One day, Jonah and I will re-record “#1 Defender” and it will be the grand epic pop ballad we were hinting at here, but maybe didn’t commit to. Still, I love it.

“Better Than This” is one of my favorite things I’ve ever written. Technically, Jonah wrote the song first. But his version sounded like Cheap Trick and I didn’t want to play that. So I took his vocal and wrote a new bed of music underneath it—almost like I’d approach a remix. I had learned fingerpicking and I was determined to use it. What I came up with, well, I still enjoy playing it at home or at soundcheck. It’s beautiful and it still makes me feel something. I hope to play it with Jonah again someday.

The band ended before its time but what was left behind still holds up. Happy birthday, Thriller. I still love you x
