I love the way these little pocket sized notebooks turned out.

I screen printed the covers by hand, using blanks made here in Portland by @scoutbooks. When I went to pick them up, I was surprised to find my dear friend @hannah_theiss_studio working there, and she gave me a little tour of the facility. It was such a fun peek behind the scenes at how these are made. There’s something really special about being able to source materials locally. ✨

Last week Evelina Cabrera visited Child Aid Girls Clubs throughout the rural highlands of Guatemala. The girls had read her book Juana La futbolista, and we shared the impact it had on them here. This caught Evelina’s attention, and after much planning and preparation, she made it to Guatemala to meet the girls.

Last week we travelled over 600 kilometers with Evelina, visiting five girls clubs. Each visit was unique and special, but we closed out each meeting the same way - Evelina took pictures with the girls and signed their activity book, leaving personal notes for each.

These unique mementos were made possible thanks to @scoutbooks who printed the custom books for the girls.

20 years ago I set out on a mission to connect people through art. Just a silly 20-year-old with nothing to lose. I remember the morning we woke up to 40+ signups, the first time we set out on a cross-country tour in the back of a 2-door Honda Civic, the smiles of people seeing their books on tour. I remember sitting at an Italian restaurant on a cool Chicago night when we came up with the idea to make this all into a library. I remember when our little art library grew from 1,200 to over 60,000 books.

What artists may not realize is that The Sketchbook Project was my entire existence. It became who I was, it was part of me. For 17 years I dedicated my daily life to the project. Sketchbook allowed me to connect with amazing, creative minds and travel the world, but it wasn’t always easy. Through all the challenges - the personal loans, personal time, and sweat equity poured into this project - seeing it’s impact was what drove me. It was never supposed to grow to the size it did. But it also wasn’t supposed to change people’s lives, inspire people to get healthier and to share their stories.

The long-term plan was to become a nonprofit, allowing the project to continue while I created space for myself to start a family. One thing I can tell you for sure is that the worst time to become a nonprofit is 5 weeks before a global pandemic, when your wife is pregnant with your first son, you’re out of money, and you’re out of energy. Then the fire happened, and it was a literal nightmare.

We don't wait for belonging, we create it.

At the end of June, we hosted our first trip to North Cascades National Park, calling the North Cascades Institute Environmental Learning Center our home base for a long weekend.

We made tea from foraged pine needles and berries, passed out custom a @kulacloth to each of our participants, tapped into our creative and meditative mindsets through a watercolor class, hiked up to Cutthroat Lake and Sourdough Falls, and did a trash pickup around the Diablo Dam. We shared stories and laughter inspired by the prompts in our Different Landscapes, Different Medicines journal series, captured our thoughts in our @scoutbooks Trail Journals, and washed it all down with @nowherefoods refreshments created specifically for the Cascades.

In the mountains, we talked about perspective, humility, and presence.

Near the water, we talked about flow, adaptability, and what you might find beneath the surface.

And on campus, we created belonging for ourselves and each other in ways that felt sustainable and nourishing.

We learned the hard history behind the beauty of present day, and imagined a better way forward for the health of the ecosystems in this region.

But most of all, we had each other. A mix of repeat retreaters spanning every location we've hosted in created a warm welcome and a soft place to land for the folks who were new to our programs. Friends who, over the years, have showed incredible vulnerability as they unpack the most brutal and beautiful parts of the human experience in some of the most brutal and beautiful places on this continent.

At every retreat, we always say, "this is the best one we've ever hosted" and it's always true. Every gathering reminds us of what is possible when we slow down to remember, to reconnect, and to return to the rhythms of nature.

Thank you for joining us and for bringing your whole heart to every moment. We are so grateful to be in community with you. 💚
