Weekly Studio Recap! July 20-23
This week we went to @scrippsceramics to see the @ruthchandlerwilliamsongallery
We were allowed to pick up and handle almost everything. My favorite piece was Keiko Fukazawa porcelain weapon. Right after we left the gallery I searched up the piece to learn more. Scripps has a very informative interview with the artist I recommended reading!
I also tried to throw an amphora in two pieces, but it collapsed at the bottom.
Then I threw a few miscellaneous things and a few cups I plan on making into greek inspired cups.
I will definitely be planning another visit to the gallery soon!

I’m still glowing from this weekend’s #karimarboetravelprize trip to L.A. to see #scrippsceramicannual Means to an End at @ruthchandlerwilliamsongallery 🔥🔥🔥 The show was absolutely incredible and inspiring- I’m still glowing. It isn’t often that I see a show celebrating the infinite possibilities of clay, I couldn’t have been more thrilled to meet such innovative artists in such a well curated space (well done @adrenieline!) The next morning we got a private tour of the #marercollectionofcontemporaryceramics courtesy of T. One of the stipulations of the collection is that visitors are ALLOWED to touch any of the pieces, which TBH is a life changing experience. Before we caught our plane, we popped into @amocamuseum on the behest of some new friends to check out their residency exhibit (thanks @kristy.moreno and @santoferraro!). So satisfying! It was a whirlwind of a 24+ hours but I managed to see 2 fantastic shows, touch the work of many of my hero’s in a basement collection, swim in a pool, see friends I haven’t seen since pre-covid, meet new ceramic friends who’s work blows me away, have a king sized bed all to myself, eat some amazing food, hang with my CCA crew led by @arimacurtis, take many uber rides, and successfully avoid a sunburn. I’m very grateful to the Kari Marboe Foundation for the gift of this adventure 🧡 artists I wasn’t able to tag in the post: #yoonhwang and my pic of @saharkhoury2010 ‘s piece didn’t turn out but her work was breathtaking

Happy Birthday, Ellen Browning Scripps! 🎉

Today we celebrate the incredible legacy of Ellen Browning Scripps (1836–1932), visionary philanthropist and first President of the Board of Trustees of the Library Association of La Jolla, now the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library.

At the Athenaeum, Ellen Browning Scripps was a major donor for our William Templeton Johnson–designed building, dedicated October 10, 1921—laying the foundation for our enduring commitment to art, music, and ideas that bring community together.

Her generosity helped found many institutions we know today, including:

This year’s exhibition, “In the Hands of the Collector: The Fred Marer and Forrest L. Merrill Collections,” guest curated by Nancy Servis, features more than 100 works by more than 60 artists, including Laura Andreson, Robert Arneson, Ralph Bacerra, David Gilhooly, Shoji Hamada, Jun Kaneko, Glen Lukens, Harrison McIntosh, Lucie Rie, Paul Soldner, Goro Suzuki, Toshiko Takaezu, Peter Voulkos, Beatrice Wood, and more.

@mayakabat and I had an amazing opportunity to see the Marer Collection @scrippscollege thanks to @adrenieline who introduced me to the director. We saw a lot of early work by Betty Woodman, Peter Voulkos, Ken Price, Jun Kaneko, and so many more. Scripps 79th Ceramic Annual never fails to surprise. This year’s theme is “The Idea of Feeling Brown” curated by Jasmine Baetz. Works in exhibition are diverse and current, keeping the viewer in the loop of clay’s agency in today’s culture. Exhibition closes on April 7, 2024. A selection of Artists in order of images:

I’ve been away from our studio for 30 days. So good to get back to work. Focus is on diving into lamp surface design, shape, color and back into mold making. I’ve made 10 new lamp shapes this year that are just sitting there waiting for me. The pics are test tiles that I’m making into molds for making test tiles from slip. I love the process.

Jasmine Baetz, day 3

Last year I started my job as Lincoln Visiting Professor in Ceramics at Scripps College and Claremont Graduate University, a position that has let me slow down and think about what I’m doing and what I want to do next. I get to work with amazing undergrads and grads, and at Scripps I’ve been designing new expanded ceramics classes. Last term I taught “Making a Feminist Life,” in which we read Sara Ahmed’s (@saranoahmed) Living a Feminist Life and made work informed by her brilliant ideas (next year we’re doing it again with Complaint!); and “Building Historical Memory” in which we researched local student activism against the backdrop of our constructed campus space and articulated strategies for building critical historical memory.

Next term I’m co-teaching “Materials and Extraction” in which we will use critical theory and ceramics to address histories of settler colonialism, labor, extraction, and material production involved in the construction, landscaping, architecture, and visual culture of the region; and “Clay and Fiber” in which we will explore clay as fiber, fiber in clay, and textiles with ceramics and apply queer, feminist, and anti-racist theories and strategies to ceramics sculptural practice.

I'm also looking forward to guest curating the 79th Scripps Ceramic Annual in January 2024 at the Williamson Gallery (@ruthchandlerwilliamsongallery) on campus, with the working title “the idea of feeling brown.” The show will deploy Jose Esteban Muñoz’ theorization of “feeling brown” as an invitation to conduct a phenomenological exploration of ceramics, bringing together artists who reflect on their lived realities, using ceramics and clay to convey situated understanding, historical consciousness, feeling, and emotion.
