There are so many things I love about this room, but let’s start at the top.

That beautiful coffered ceiling, with its subtle silver-leaf finish, was already in the apartment, and I am so glad it was! This is a long room with windows only along the far wall, so getting light all the way through the space could have been a challenge. The softly reflective finish catches the natural light from the windows and carries it farther into the room, while the coffers break up the reflection so it feels luminous rather than shiny. Looking at the way it softly illuminates the room in these photos, it’s  one of those wonderful existing details that I am so happy we decided to keep.

And then there is the art. Our clients wanted art to be an important part of this home, and they started collecting early in the renovation process. So that wonderful large crowd painting was added to the floor plans practically from day one, just so we could design around it. The pieces above the sofa were commissioned specifically for the space. I love that mix: finding pieces you fall in love with and, in other places, creating something specifically for the room.

The fireplace is  a work of art in its own right, a true showpiece. We went big with that wildly figured marble and kept everything around it fairly restrained so the stone could really be the focus.

The furniture was also carefully selected. There are very few anonymous shapes in this room. The Barcelona chair, the curved wood-framed chairs, the two klismos chairs at the game table, all have a sculptural quality. Nothing is overly matched, and pieces from very different periods are perfectly happy living together.

And, of course, those windows. It’s Manhattan, after all. The view was always going to be part of the room.

The more time I spend with this room, the more I love it. So yes, you are getting all the angles.

This is one of my favorite rooms in our Fifth Avenue project, partly because there is just so much to look at. The incredible landscape mural is on a textured grasscloth, so it has this beautiful depth that changes with the light. We carried that deep, almost-black green up through the millwork and ceiling, then added the Urban Electric chandelier, warm wood, stone tabletop, brass and that wonderful hit of green velvet.

And as much as I love the finishes, the room also had to function in multiple ways.

We designed the custom banquette to give us generous seating without filling the room with chairs and taking up precious floor space. It keeps the center of the room more open and allows the space to flex for more than just dinner, which mattered in a New York apartment.

One of my other favorite details is the glass wall and doors between the dining room and foyer. You get these little framed glimpses from one room into the next, and the light can travel through while the dining room still feels wonderfully enclosed and intimate.

I’m incredibly proud of this one. It’s dramatic, layered, functional, a little unexpected and just flat-out gorgeous. Every time I look at these photos, I find another detail I love

After nearly 30 years in this Upper East Side apartment, our clients considered moving downtown before realising they were too attached to their neighborhood to leave.

We reworked the floor plan to open up the rooms and create better connections throughout the apartment. Our longtime collaborator David Netto (whose work has always moved easily between uptown tradition and downtown energy) paired the 1920s architecture with bold color, modern furnishings, antiques, and the clients’ art and photography collection.

An 1872 silk warehouse has a lot of history to respect, from the soaring ceilings to the massive windows. We worked to preserve that incredible sense of openness while giving a family of six the structure they need to actually live here.
