POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Grateful to this whole crew that showed up and showed out today. It’s a special thing when the people you used to work with continue to work along side you even when the roles change, the locations change, the departments change, the titles change, the dynamics change… but the showing up? It’s still there. And that’s pretty dang dope.

I was honored to join Trustee Whitehurst Payne to bring forward a Black History Month resolution at yesterday’s school board meeting.

This is not about one month; it’s about lifting up Black excellence all year long and building a school district where Black students are affirmed, supported, and given every opportunity to reach their full potential and achieve their dreams.

In his new book, The People Can Fly, Joshua Bennett reminds us that Black history is not simply a story of struggle — it is a story of imagination, joy, resilience, and boundless possibility. Our schools must reflect that truth.

That’s why this resolution pairs celebration with responsibility, using disaggregated data to ensure accountability, confront disparities, and turn our values into positive outcomes for Black students.

This is our commitment: to see Black brilliance clearly, support it fully, and nurture it every day of the year.

Last Friday, we gathered with Economics teachers from across the district for an Economics & Ethnic Studies professional learning session.

Educators engaged with lesson plans and classroom-ready activities from our Economics–Ethnic Studies pilot course, exploring how ethnic studies frameworks can deepen economic analysis, inquiry, and student understanding.

Grateful for the thoughtful collaboration and feedback as we continue refining and expanding this work together.

San Diego Unified honored Native American Heritage Month with a districtwide gathering at Centro Cultural de la Raza on November 6, bringing Native students, teachers, families, and community partners together on Kumeyaay land. Students and elders reminded us that Native communities are still here — carrying forward traditions through powwow dance, storytelling, and powerful affirmations of identity and ancestral pride.

Inter-Tribal STAR Dancers shared the beauty and diversity of powwow styles, student speakers reflected on the importance of honoring their ancestors, and guests from across the district came together to celebrate cultural preservation, community voice, and Indigenous strength.

With gratitude to Title VI Johnson-O’Malley Indian Education Program, Centro Cultural de la Raza, and our partners across Equity & Belonging, Youth Advocacy, and Restorative Justice for helping create a space that uplifts the original stewards of this land and centers the values of Ethnic Studies.
