Details from Alexander Irving's (@seairving) current exhibition, "Thickets".

On view, October 7 - 31, 2026

Thickets is an exhibition of text-based paintings and works on paper through which language becomes form, and form suggests a poetics of reverie. In these works, the boundary between the legible word and the abstract mark dissolves.

Hung my painting with a fold up table, hung Jeneath's with a ladder. Gotta keep OSHA guessing.

Better photos of this piece are coming soon!

Today, 𝙒𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙙𝙚 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 opens at the Red Head Gallery! This group exhibition marks Red Head's 35th anniversary and features work by the 18 current members of the gallery.

The show runs from 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟮 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, with an opening reception on Saturday, October 25, from 6 - 8 PM. Sadly, I will miss the reception while I am travelling abroad.

𝘞𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 celebrates the vision, commitment, and creative force of the 18 current members of The Red Head Gallery, one of Canada’s most enduring artist-run centres. The gallery, founded in 1990, has marked 35 years of continuous activity. Shaped entirely by artists for artists, Red Head’s self-sufficiency has been nurtured by those who came before and continues to guide the current membership in fostering innovation, diversity, and creative exploration. Over this time, 180 artists have persevered to build and sustain Red Head’s cultural significance as an artist-run centre.

I'm thrilled to be part of an exhibition with this incredible group of artists: Jim Bourke | Geoffrey L. Cheung | Christine Dewancker | James Fowler | Tonia Di Risio | Soheila Esfahani | Grant Heaps | Gillian Iles | Alexander Irving | Ian Mackay | Laura Millard | David McClyment | Tazeen Qayyum | Amin Rehman | Lois Schklar | Pearl Van Geest | Elaine Whittaker

Last week, we searched for the miraculous through Alexander Irving’s work. Words came together to form unexpected narratives—connections, surprises, and a testament to time and repetition. As language and gesture intertwined, new meanings emerged, inviting us to consider how text and form shape one another.

Ellie and I thoroughly enjoyed immersing ourselves in his work, letting each piece quietly reveal its magic. Scroll to the end to see Ellie and Mariah taking it all in—the children of two former students now experiencing Alexander’s work for themselves.

Congratulations @seairving !!
