Another fun and phenomenal evening with crew at @mandrillmartialarts and with @ellijayjiujitsu crew!

Tonight we played with a high % back take from Mount and once we got there, we found out that ARMBARS are indeed EVERYWHERE! We found the first principles of the armbar (“what must be true”) can be found from one of the most dominating positions in all of fighting: back control!

Always such a fun group to explore and grow with!!

Another fun and rewarding class at @ellijayjiujitsu with the gang! This month we are doing a deep dive focus on the ARMBAR! Starting with fundamentals, we are planting the seed that “armbars are everywhere!”… just starts with understanding the simplistic “what must be true” for the technique! 🙌💪

📸 Tonight’s Class: Kimuras, Chaos, & Cartoons

Tonight was a fun one — and these reanimated pics (Peaky Blinders + Big Mouth vibes 🤣) somehow captured the energy perfectly.

Huge welcome to Britton, our newest member! He fit right in immediately — strong energy, great questions, great attitude. Excited to have him in the fold. 🔥

This week’s curriculum has been bottom-entry kimuras, and tonight we lived in one of my favorite places on earth:

Bottom Half Guard + Kimura = a whole galaxy of options

We dug deep into the nerdy mechanics that make this position feel like a playground:
• “Hand in front = control. Hand in back = break.”
• “Face the hips for the bite. Face the shoulders for the break.”
• “If you can’t move them, move you.”
• Overloading the post.
• The hinge concept.
• And how all of those combine into a system — not just a move.

Bottom half kimura is one of those positions where technique, creativity, and leverage all meet in the same room. When you feel it click, it feels like art.

What a day at Newbreed!
One of our up-and-coming athletes from North Georgia Martial Arts stepped onto the competition mats for the first time today—and made a statement.

First match? No-gi. His least favorite format and a brutal reminder that comp is a different beast. Took an early loss by submission.

But then… something clicked.

He came back composed and collected—went 3-0 after that, with a bronze medal in no-gi capped off by a slick rear choke finish.

Then came the gi.
Match 1? My all-time favorite submission—loop choke.
Match 2? No break. His next opponent was waiting and ready. He stepped in and got it done again—rear collar choke.

2 finishes. Under 3 minutes. Gold.
🔥

The future is bright for this one. And this is just the beginning.
Proud isn’t the word. Now… back to work. 🥋💪

This morning wasn’t just another 8:30am Saturday Jiu Jitsu class… it was something special.
I had the honor of training alongside five of my former students, teammates, and friends—most of whom I was there to witness when they first stepped onto the mats. Today, they beat me up (haha), and remind me what real coaching success looks like.

Success isn’t just building champions. It’s building coaches. It’s planting trees that grow taller than you, stronger than you, and that one day grow other trees. These guys represent that to me—and I couldn’t be more proud.

Thank you @jonahmatthes , @beekmixes , @epena_ep , @bsrankin13 & @cajones3003 for making the trip. Seeing the kind of humans you’re becoming, on and off the mats, gives me great pride!
.
Super happy I was able to share that world with @claytonpatterson84 & his son & guest-student Steven. Bringing my two Jiu Jitsu worlds together and watching everyone train, laugh, and learn side by side was something I don’t take for granted.

Me & Courtany have really been enjoying hosting up here for friends that come to visit.. very fulfilling experience for both of us! 💚
.
Here’s to growing more things that grow things 🙌🙌 🌱

Another fantastic event put on by NFC last night, highlighting Jiu Jitsu in Atlanta. Amanda got the job done with spectacular control and a pace that is difficult to keep up with. Her understanding of posture, position and control has grown at a rapid pace and was on full display last night.
The quartet went 1-1 last night in route to a second place finish. We ran into some strategic difficulties with regard to engagement - but that’s part of the game and one we will be addressing the answer for as a team. Their individual performances on the mats were very inspiring however as they continued to be the most active competitors in the entire event… offensive patterns… seeking finality in every engagement… these 4 stepped on the stage (3 of them wildly undersized compared to the competition, and the other was his *very first* competition.., and he chose it on the big stage). You can take all those considerations away and I’m still insanely proud of this team and how they represented the special things we are cooking up at SBG. Last night was a warning to everyone: we’re coming #takeover #tribe #cteam SEE YOU AT CHURCH 🙏🤘

Insanely good training tonight. I feel my body and mind coming together with each session with these guys! February’s competition team should be fun af to watch. Getting back to form, 20 min scolding hot epsom salt baths and video study.

Wouldn’t want to do it with another team! We been building something special. Wait n see 😎🖤🤘

(Oh, also… brother Voytek got the memo!)

My yearly "look where we started" post. History began 11 short years ago!

I love re-sharing this moment every time it pops up in my feed. I was introduced to BJJ about a year prior and when the gym I went to went belly-up, I just bought mats and started my own at-home gym (grew to a couple dozen members). On this day, 11 years ago, i reached out to @get_your_phill to do a seminar at my home gym (Voytek Tarnowski joined him!)....got a decent turn out. Tons of great techniques. About a month later, he invited us out to his gym to train. Not long after, I closed my doors and trained under Coach Phillipe from then on out & the rest, as they say, isssssss history!
