Tonight, August 9, the Season 3 Finale of House of the Dragon airs on HBO. This episode was a banger from the very beginning, and I hope I’ve done it justice. Though about a war, I hope the futility of war is what the audience comes away with…. It’s not often in a career that one is given the trust, the freedom and the responsibility to bring something this massive from the page to the screen. For this, I’m deeply indebted to show runner Ryan Condal, Exec Producer Kevin De La Noy, and Francesca Orsi of HBO. To the Episode 8 team (The Wolf Pack)- DP Vanja Černul, AD Paul Slavin, DA Antje Mangeant, additional AD Jay Ferral Miles & Driver Mark Moreton- thank you for your hearts, patience, humor and wolf howls. To David Hancock, Ti Mikkel, Sara Hess & Phillipa Goslett (writers), the dance of having my back by being on it was a true joy, honestly, one I’ll do any day with you again. To Jim Clay (Production Designer), Claire Richards (Set Decorator), Rowley Irlam (Stunt Coordinator), Adam <Butcher> Bosman (Editor), Dadi Einarrson & Tom Horton (VFX) thank you all, I’m lucky to have worked with each of you; your smiles mean everything to me. We want to celebrate our patrons and the incredible support they give us, without which we couldn't function as an association. So to kick off the series we will start with Mo-sys.

A big supporter of theirs is Sean Savage, who said this in an article for them;
“I own a Mo-Sys L40, which is a two-axis non-stabilised remote head. It’s very strong, very powerful, and it’s not temperamental. As long as it’s balanced properly, it’s a very, very tolerant head. I shoot about half of any show with it – pretty much any shot that doesn’t require stabilisation. I even use it on small jibs and non-telescopic arms up to about 20ft. If there’s a dolly shot to be done, 75% of the time I’ll use the L40, because I think the flexibility is far better. You get all the dynamic moves, all the fun of the underslung mode, and the grip doesn’t have to push me around on the dolly. There’s no tech - my grip and camera team are very ‘au fait’ with it. I have my handwheels, monitor, radio unit, the whole setup all mounted on a magliner, where we also keep the head. I can just sit at one end of it and operate. It’s fantastic!”

I’m absolutely delighted to see that ITVX will be showing all three seasons of the wonderful PENNYWORTH, which I had a hugely rewarding time working on from 2019 until 2021. In all I directed five episodes and each year provided another fulfilling experience, working with an incredible cast of phenomenal actors, a wonderful crew and a great production team. It was one of those shows where everyone felt empowered to give of their best and pull together to create something fresh, original and exciting. It started broadcasting in the USA on EPIX and moved to HBO, making it somewhat difficult for those in the UK to enjoy. But now it’s available on ITVX, I hope that those who missed it first time around will get to join in the fun.

Have you recovered from last night's climatic Season 2 finale of HBO's "House of the Dragon" yet? Cinematographer Catherine Goldschmidt captured Episode 3 and the season finale on ARRI's ALEXA 35 camera with ARRI Rental's ALFA lenses:
