Guess what I’ll be doing in two months? Returning to my very favorite place in the mountains @johnccampbellfolkschool to teach my very first weeklong class there — and I hope you’ll join!
.
Late September is one of the most beautiful times of year to be at the folk school, and if we’re lucky we’ll coincide with some prime foraged snacks (chestnuts and crab apples, persimmons and paw paws, oh my!).
.
This class isn’t just broommaking - it’s how to identify, process, and responsibly forage materials. How to make a simple tool when you’re on the go and want to make a broom, and what to acquire and build when you’re setting up a home studio. You’ll leave with knowledge, new tools, and a ton of resources (and, of course, brooms!)
.
This is teach a man to fish, but broommaking — and we’ll have a ton of fun!

Feeling very grateful after spending the week at Peter’s Valley. I want take a moment to sincerely thank @petersvalley for the generous scholarship; I wouldn’t have been able to make the trip otherwise. A special thanks to the Marie Zimmerman Foundation for making it happen.

I came away with a new perspective on blacksmithing as a whole. @phyreforge challenged us to slow down and think about our hammer blows, forging with intention, and trying to polish our work. It’s a lesson I’ll carry with me every time I step in front of the anvil. To be working alongside Pete and other talented smiths was a privilege, and I hope that the new friends I made there stay in touch. The community is one of the best parts of this craft. As an homage to Marie Zimmerman, I plan on sharing the lessons I learned with other folks and hopefully form a community of forging in my location, as it’s sparse near me. I’ve decided that my next step is to obtain my instructor certification from @abanaorg to further bolster my desire to spread the lessons I’ve been shown.

Roughly quoting Pete, we are a group of people doing what we love. Not everyone gets to have a craft they’re so passionate about, and that’s something I’m thankful for.

Thank you again to Peter’s Valley. The entire staff of folks who fed us and made us feel welcome, the Marie Zimmerman Foundation, Pete, and everyone present who made it such a memorable week. @seanfitzkitchen welcomed us into the shop and made sure we had everything we needed. I enjoyed every moment of it. #mariezimmermann #blacksmithing #petersvalleyschoolofcraft #abana #phyreforge

hello! I’ve had a couple projects brewing and am finally ready, and very excited, to share them :-)

first— issue 1 of ‘landforms’ — the publication I’ve been working on— is ready! the process of taking ‘landforms’ from idea to book has been such a treat, and a real learning experience. the final little book includes nine pieces of writing, from craftspeople + land stewards, that I’m honored to share. these essays + stories—about fostering connection to place, art-making with locally grown + foraged materials, and rekindling family craft traditions—all feel especially pertinent in a time when care for the Earth has never been less prioritized.

I printed these during a residency at @directanglepress (and learned a heck of a lot about 4-color riso registration…) I ended up with ~60 copies, since they were so time-intensive to make. If you’d like one of the special first editions— four color riso printed, cover typeset and printed on a Vandercook press, and hand assembled + bound by me—now’s the chance. I’m planning another print run of this issue at some point, since I’d like to print lots more at a lower cost, though they won’t be quite as handmade :-)

second— a project a long time in the making, a letterpress poster made in collaboration with a dear friend, @starsheepz this piece was inspired by a poster I made in the winter of ’23 after a year of working at the @johnccampbellfolkschool - I missed life at the Folk School dearly, so jotted down a list of practices to hold onto. later I thought to turn it into a print to share with others. Ellie made the sweet papercut which became the illustration, and a new friend Sally @ratbeepress kindly let me print these in her studio. whether or not you’ve been to a folk school, I hope these strike a chord.

I’m real excited to get these out into the world, and feel so lucky to have many creative collaborators to make sweet projects alongside. in a time where so many systems are so blatantly causing violence and harm to people and landscapes, the work of dreaming + collaborating + creating feels like such a necessary and powerful tool of world-building. feel free to share- site is in my bio hannahladesic.com
