🎟️Today’s MLK Luncheon is SOLD OUT.

And somehow I spent yesterday evening in San Jose sandwiched between Sean “The Science Kid” and a whole squad of furries before the MLK celebration. Only in California, right?

Here’s why this day is special for me. Sean and I are doing a fireside chat hosted by the African American Community Service Agency (AACSA) and San José State University, and I cannot think of a better day to talk about science, leadership, and what progress actually requires.

Three things MLK reminds me of, especially in a world moving at the speed of AI and innovation:

🧠 Progress is not neutral.
Dr. King pushed for systems that actually protect people, not just ideas that sound good. Science and technology work the same way. The question is never “can we build it?” It’s “who does it serve, and who gets left behind if we don’t do this responsibly?”

🔬 Education is a civil rights issue, still.
MLK knew access to opportunity starts with access to learning. Today, science literacy and tech fluency are part of that access. If kids cannot see themselves in STEM, cannot access the tools, or cannot get mentorship, we’re not building the future. We’re repeating the past with better gadgets.

🤝🏾 Community is the real accelerator.
The civil rights movement was powered by people who showed up for each other, consistently. Innovation works the same way. Breakthroughs don’t happen in isolation. They happen when schools, universities, families, and community leaders build together, share resources, and keep the “why” bigger than the spotlight.

If you’re in the room today, come say hi. I’ll be the one smiling, probably still confused about how the furries got here, but completely grateful to be part of a day that calls all of us to lead with purpose.
