Making an impact beyond the classroom and in our community.

Westminster Academy Environmental Club students recently joined local volunteers, Adopt-a-Dune, the South Florida Audubon Society, and Pompano Beach City Commissioner Audrey Fesik for a dune restoration project in Pompano Beach.

Together, the group planted more than 900 native plants, including sea oats, beach sunflower, railroad vine, and saw palmetto—helping strengthen and restore an important part of our South Florida coastline.

For our students, service is an opportunity to put faith into action, care well for the community around them, and steward God’s creation. One project leader shared, “I truly enjoyed working with your students. They are so caring, empathetic, and compassionate.”

We’re grateful to see WA students using their time and talents to make a meaningful difference right here in South Florida. 🌊🌱🌴☀️

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out Saturday to help with our dunes project! 🌊🌱💙

Protecting our dunes means protecting our beach, our wildlife, and one of the things that makes Pompano Beach so special.

I’m incredibly grateful for every volunteer who gave their time and energy to help care for our coastline. Small actions, when we do them together, make a BIG difference.

Thank you for showing up for Pompano Beach! 💕

Residents First. Always.

Florida Climate Week is October 5 - 11, which means a variety of climate and environmental events happening all over Florida.

an (*) next to the event indicates a Florida Climate Week event

Florida is a pretty big state, but thankfully there are plenty of events in the South Florida tri-county area.

Florida has a lot to lose to climate change.

we’re one of the most vulnerable states, and we all know we’ve been experiencing the impact for many years already.

climate conversations must break into the mainstream so we can create meaningful and swift change at the social, political, and cultural levels.

I cannot stress this enough: we have all the climate solutions we need, we’re just not implementing them. (thank you, Dr. @ayanaeliza)

we have the power to change course this November by voting.

make sure you’re registered to vote in Florida by October 5- double-check your registration at vote.org

my Florida Midterm voting guide will be available October 5, 2026.

Hello, Hollywood! 👋

Do you care about the future of our city and the direction we’re heading? Do you want Hollywood to be a safer, more affordable, better connected place to live?

Then come join us Wednesday, September 9 at Chilelimón.

LIVE FROM HOLLYWOOD is planned to be a night with some intention behind it: meet a neighbor you’ve never met, make a friend, and have conversations about the kind of future we want for Hollywood.

And yes, there will be live music, good food, drinks and plenty of time to just hang out and enjoy the evening.

You’ll also get to meet and talk with some of the people who have helped shape our community:
• Broward County Commissioner Beam Furr
• Broward County School Board Member Debbi Hixon
• Hollywood Commissioner Idelma Quintana
• Former State Senator Eleanor Sobel
• Former State Representative Elaine Schwartz
• Former Hollywood Commissioner Dick Blattner

Along with a growing host committee of Hollywood residents putting this night together.

This event is in support of Adam Roberti’s campaign for Hollywood City Commission, District 5, but donations are optional and everyone is welcome.

Live music. New friends. Good conversation.
Live from Hollywood.

A truly rewarding way to celebrate World Oceans Month at MEEC, planting Sea Oat seedlings!🌱🍃

Why? Those who know me, know my heart belongs to Mother Ocean.

When I’m not teaching, I’m at the beach cleaning up the shore and advocating for marine conservation 🌊🪸🐠

Last weekend, I honored World Oceans Day by joining the legendary Lee Gottlieb—the "Sea Oat Guy"—at his MEEC dune restoration project in Hollywood! 🌿

Thank you Lee Gottlieb, aka the "Sea Oat Guy" for organizing the sand dune planting, you are so inspiring! 🌿🌊

Lee has spent 30+ years protecting our coastlines through his organization, @AdoptADune. Planting sea oats isn’t just about beauty; it’s also about creating storm-resilient barriers and protecting vital wildlife habitats like sea turtles. 🐢✨

Want to get your hands in the sand? Check out @AdoptADune to join the movement!

Big thanks to James Lange, Lead Botanist at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden for teaching us about how species like Sea Oats, Railroad Vine, Beach Morning Glory, and Sea Grape work together to protect our coastlines. Grateful for your expertise and dedication! 🌊✨

Get out there and start spreading the word about Ocean Conservation today & everyday!! Thank.you 🙏🏽💙🌊💕

Another great Saturday morning out on the beach with Adopt-A-Dune. 🌱🏖️

For the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of volunteering alongside Lee Gottlieb and Doug Young, two people who have dedicated countless hours to protecting our coastline and natural environment.

Lee, founder of Adopt-A-Dune, has worked extensively with the City of Pompano Beach and communities throughout South Florida, helping guide dune restoration projects, environmental initiatives, and policies designed to protect our coastal resources for future generations. His knowledge and commitment have made a real difference in preserving the natural beauty and resilience of our shoreline.

Doug Young is a longtime advocate through the South Florida Audubon Society and serves as a Marine Turtle Permit Holder, helping protect sea turtles and the wildlife that depend on our beaches and coastal habitats.

Healthy dunes do far more than provide beautiful scenery. They help reduce erosion, protect sea turtle nesting areas, support native wildlife, improve storm resilience, and preserve the character of our coastline.

If you’ve ever thought about getting involved, they can always use more volunteers up and down our coastline. And if you’re unable to volunteer, donations help support native plantings, restoration efforts, educational programs, and ongoing conservation work.

Thank you to Lee, Doug, and all of the volunteers who continue to show up year after year to protect one of our community’s most valuable natural resources.

Our beaches don’t stay beautiful by accident. They stay beautiful because people care enough to do the work. 🌊💚

I was asked by @dimelo305 at #Baynanza2026 why it is important to protect our natural resources. My brain immediately went to trying to make the environment more appealing to everyone, by describing all the things our natural treasures have for us to enjoy, and that we should protect them, so we can enjoy them.
As I have taken more time to sit with that question, the truth is that we should protect the earth and the environment, because it is continually protecting and providing for us. The mangroves and coral reefs protect us from hurricane and storm damage, while providing nurseries and habitat for much of the seafood we consume. The seagrass beds, forests, and oceans remove literal tons of carbon dioxide from the environment and provide oxygen for us to breathe. The Everglades and aquifers provide storage for our fresh water, reducing both floods in the wet season and drought in the dry season, as well as purifying our drinking water. The list goes on...
We have taken so much for so long from the earth. It's time we give back. Not just for a day or a month. But strive to make every day Earth Day, and show some love and protect our unique and irreplaceable home.
Thanks to all the amazing groups, non-profits, and individuals doing their part to preserve our treasures.

🌎 What better way to spend Earth Day, than advocating for a balanced approach to beach conservation? 🌎

I joined my dear friend, @seaoatguy Lee Gottlieb, in encouraging the City of Hollywood to take a more surgical approach to our beach’s dune construction program. We must ensure resiliency while still maintaining emergency access points, recreational spaces, sight lines, and the economic viability of Hollywood Beach.

My company, @miramarbakery, is the first private entity to “Adopt a Dune” on Hollywood Beach. As a longtime advocate for dunes, I look forward to the project being completed; the right way - the Hollywood way!
