What does it take to move from community participation to genuine community leadership in conservation?

R&E Ocean Community Conservation is pleased to participate in the Student Conference on Conservation Science–New York 2026 at the American Museum of Natural History.

During the interactive workshop “From Community Members to Community Scientists: Designing Effective Community-Based Conservation Programs,” Ann Carole Vallejo and Valentina Giron will share practical lessons from R&E’s community-based marine conservation work in Colombia.

Using real experiences from whale and dolphin monitoring, responsible wildlife tourism, sea turtle conservation and environmental education, participants will explore how to:

• Meaningfully engage community stakeholders
• Integrate local knowledge with scientific research
• Co-design reliable biodiversity monitoring programs
• Strengthen community skills, leadership and decision-making
• Plan for long-term ownership and sustainability

Participants will also work in groups to design their own community-led conservation strategy, considering not only how local people can contribute to a project, but how they can lead it, manage its data and help determine its future.

📅 October 14, 2026
🕘 9:00–11:45 a.m. EDT
📍 American Museum of Natural History, New York City

🐋 Why this workshop?
At ECS Scotland 2026,
“A Cost–Benefit Framework for Whale & Dolphin Watching: Evidence, Impacts & Solutions” invites us to look deeper.

We hope to see perspectives from across the world, from Scotland, Iceland, Norway, Colombia, to across the Atlantic and Caribbean, and even the sunny islands of the Azores and Canary Islands 🌍

✨ But this workshop is for everyone working in whale and dolphin watching.
Your experience matters, no matter where you are.

👉 When does whale watching support conservation?
👉 When might it create pressure on animals?

Let’s explore it together.

Another month has flown by.
60 days in the most remote place on Earth: Antarctica 🤍❄️
Here, time takes on a different meaning. The silence is so deep you can almost hear the ice breathe. Icebergs drift slowly by, the wind carves the snow, and the light is never the same twice. No notifications, no digital noise — just raw nature and the powerful feeling of being wonderfully small in front of something immense.
I walked on the white continent, listened to the sound of cracking ice, and saw colors I didn’t even know existed. I shared exhaustion, laughter, endless shifts, and real science with the best team I could have wished for.
A complete social media detox, but a profound connection to everything else.
Forever one of the most intense and authentic experiences of my life. 🌍✨

🌊 We participated in the Humpback Whale World Congress! 🐋

The R&E Foundation had the honor of participating in the Humpback Whale World Congress (HWWC) — an international forum dedicated to sharing the latest research on humpback whale migration, distribution, genetics, and the threats they face.

📍 Our presentation focused on the study we’ve been conducting over the past four years in Antarctica, specifically in the Ross Sea, aiming to identify the occurrence and distribution of marine mammals in the region, as well as to understand which species are present and what threats they are exposed to.

🧊 Antarctica is one of the planet’s most fragile ecosystems, and generating scientific knowledge about its biodiversity is crucial for effective conservation.

💙 We thank the HWWC for creating this space for international collaboration and reaffirm our commitment to research and the protection of marine ecosystems.

🌊 ¡Participamos en el Humpback Whale World Congress! 🐋
