So happy to see Korean Rhapsody: Sijo in the September print edition of the International Examiner @internationalexaminer 🤍

This project was close to my heart. I curated the exhibition and led the artistic direction, bringing together Korean poetry, contemporary visual art, dance, and live calligraphy.

Alongside artists KyoungMug Park @kyoungmug and YoungHwa Choi @yh.relief , I exhibited my own work (@miyoungmargolis_art x @mmdc_dance_company ) at Seattle Art Fair @seattleartfair and performed with KyoungMug at @artgalleryb612 Gallery B612. Being part of this project as a curator, artistic director, artist, and dancer made it especially meaningful to me.

Thank you, @dawn2946 , for the care and thought you brought to our story, and to the International Examiner for sharing it with the community.

Dear Friends,

Time flies, and it has been a busy summer at Yiwei Gallery.

Over the past two months, our program has moved across cities and formats—from Wuhan and Seattle to online presentations, bringing together exhibitions, art fairs, new artists, and conversations around contemporary art.

As summer comes to a close, we’re looking back at a few highlights from July and August—and looking ahead to The Armory Show @thearmoryshow in New York this September.

I’m deeply grateful to Dawn & @internationalexaminer for this thoughtful feature on Korean Rhapsody: Sijo 💝

As the creator & artistic director of Korean Rhapsody: Sijo, I brought together visual art, Korean calligraphy, poetry, music, movement, and live performance to create one interdisciplinary conversation between Korean tradition and contemporary expression.

The project brought together the work of @kyoungmug , @yh.relief YoungHwa Choi, and my own visual art and movement practice @miyoungmargolis_art | @mmdc_dance_company

With KyoungMug, Korean Ink Painting and live movement came together in real time, creating a dialogue between brush, body, story and space.

YoungHwa shared her visual art practice and also led a Sagunja (Four Gracious Plants) workshop at @artgalleryb612 , giving audiences an opportunity to experience Korean traditional art through direct participation.

My own contribution included the artistic direction and movement work for the project, along with my Fifth Landscape visual art series, which was also featured during @seattleartfair Seattle Art Fair week

Korean Rhapsody: Sijo was presented during Seattle Art Fair week and was selected as part of the 2026 Korean Cultural Week, with support from the @koreanconsulate__seattle Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Seattle. The project later continued through the encore presentation Sijo — A Love Letter, with support from Conru Art Foundation / @artlovesalon

I’m incredibly thankful to the artists and collaborators who trusted my direction and brought their own voices and artistry into this project, and to everyone who came to experience the work with us.

Thank you again, Dawn Dailey, for taking the time to look deeply into the work and for telling this story with such care. ❤️

This diptych went from Los Angeles to Seattle and right back to LA. Sold through social media. Lesson of the day: keep posting your art so it can reach that one person.

‘Outsider/Insider’ // 96” x 48” diptych
aka ‘The Loved Ones’ - new title given by the collector’s 4year old son :) Thank you Lauren for being a repeat collector, to Yiwei for the opportunity to show my work & the Seattle Art Fair for providing the space & platform. Feeling recharged.⚡️

What we brought to the table @seattleartfair || It was pure joy bringing this scene to life with artist Jeff Peters, whose vision and work continues to inspire.

You can find a few of these works at the gallery if you missed seeing them at the fair. 🍰 #jefffpeters #contemporaryart #hallspassov #collectart

Thank you @seattleartfair.
At Seattle Art Fair 2026, Yiwei Gallery presented Shanghai-based Artist Sun Yao.
We were pleased to meet a thoughtful and engaged audience, continuing our dedication to showcasing artists from the broader Asian diaspora and fostering conversations of cultural exchange.

-

Sun Yao (b. 1974, Shanghai) is a Chinese painter working primarily with oil. He received his BA and PhD from the China Academy of Art, and his MFA from the Fine Arts College of Shanghai University.

From a young age, he was fascinated by the science fiction genre. During his training, he developed an obsessive dedication to capturing the nuances of the human body, which heavily influenced his artistic process. Sun’s practice centers on the exploration of the human condition and the meaning of individual existence. In his work, the combination of cosmic and natural phenomena, alongside the delicate yet complex structure of human tendons, nerves, and faces, merges to create his distinctive abstract landscapes.

Over the years, Sun developed his unique “classical abstract” art style through his continuous research of Baroque art. In his painting process, Sun often uses his fingers, cloth, custom-made palette knives, and brushes to smudge, wipe, and scrape, creating tactile textures reflective of his painting philosophy. From his early series Body and Landscapes of the Face to the ongoing series like Neverland and Inner Universe, the artist navigates as a bold voyager – alone yet solitary – crossing imagined realms of nature and the unknown. By reflecting on life‘s limits and what lies beyond, he forges a contemporary vision of the sublime.

@seattleartfair | Seattle Art Fair 2026 — what an unforgettable experience.

@artgalleryb612 was honored to present Korean Rhapsody: Sijo as an official program of Korean Cultural Week 2026, featuring new works by KyoungMug Park @kyoungmug , YoungHwa Choi @yh.relief , and MiYoung Margolis @miyoungmargolis_art .

Inspired by sijo, a traditional Korean poetic form, the presentation brought together ink, hanji, mixed media, and contemporary visual language to explore nature, emotion, and Korean cultural identity.

Throughout the fair, our booth welcomed thousands of visitors, collectors, artists, curators, and art lovers. We were deeply grateful for the thoughtful conversations surrounding the works—and especially happy to see several pieces begin new journeys in private collections.

The experience extended beyond the fair through Korean Rhapsody: Sijo — A Love Letter, a live painting and movement performance by KyoungMug Park and MiYoung Margolis, and a special Sagunja ink painting workshop led by YoungHwa Choi.

Our heartfelt thanks to Seattle Art Fair, the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Seattle @koreanconsulate_seattle , Margolis Arts Foundation, Art Love Salon @artlovesalon , and all of our participating artists, performers, staff, volunteers, collectors, partners, and visitors.

The fair may be over, but Korean Rhapsody: Sijo continues at Gallery B612’s Pioneer Square location through the end of September.
