To some, a gauge may seem like a simple instrument. For Buz Ras (@seattlespeedometer) and his varied client base, it represents the heart and soul of the driving experience, from valuable concours winners and vintage racers to humble weekend drivers.

At first glance Ras fits comfortably into his environment as the shop is located on a farm just outside Ellensburg, Washington. The whole place gave me flashbacks to olden times, a romantic notion of life on the farm that Ras is living every day, but in lieu of traditional crops his harvest is analog gauges. He’s slowly repurposed this rustic barn, his workplace, for more than a decade by turning it into a working museum dedicated to humble automotive gauges.

George ‘Buz’ Ras III is not your stereotypical automotive repairman. He is six-feet, six-inches tall, athletic, and has flowing shoulder-length blonde hair with a demeanor that reflects a certain contentment that is hard to miss. Everyone calls him Buz, a nickname he inherited from his Uncle Buz, whom he closely resembles.

During my visit, Ras was busy putting the finishing touches on a speedometer for a California-based collector. With the precision of a Swiss watchmaker, complete with vintage pliers and tweezers, he delicately re-attached a freshly painted orange pointer, gracefully setting it against a backdrop of pristine, luminous white numbers, a gauge unmistakably part of Porsche’s celebrated five-dial dashboard.

It’s a busy enterprise, and parcels constantly flow in and out of his shop. You know the UPS driver is due with the next batch when Birdie, the family Australian Shepherd and Labrador mix, shuffles off and positions herself at the gravel path’s end. She is waiting for treats; the UPS driver has become her best buddy due to his frequent visits to the shop.

Thanks to George ‘Buz’ Ras III, we can still appreciate the artistry of the past and see that gauges still matter.

I never do this, but I’m sorry this experience was so terrible I have to let the car community know. I am sure I will probably just be blocked by this company.

This is the gauge for Herbie returned to me exactly as I sent it in 5+ years ago to @seattlespeedometer I’m not going to post all the excuses, I was given in those 5 years, but here’s the cliff notes.

I won a gauge “rebuild” in a raffle while on a driving event. Very excited I decided to redo a gauge for Herbie. I fully understood no one likes doing work for free, so I sent it in to Buz and told him I would like to pay him whatever extra to make it a 200 MPH speedometer like in the film. After years of excuses about graphics guys etc…nothing was ever done. I would see him make post after post of other gauges being restored, finally I asked for my gauge to be sent back. Even just getting it back took 2 months and a couple reminders.

During this 5 years, I actually sent him nearly 4K in work from South City Rod & Custom customer cars. A complete gauge cluster and two tachometers. They were sent to him on a deadline with tons of time to complete them and he barely got them back to us before the show. When they did arrive had issues and one of the two tachometers didn’t even work because he had waited until the last minute and could not acquire the needed parts. He has offered to make these right, but I would literally send them anywhere but back to Seattle Speedometer and you should send your gauges anywhere but here also.

Don’t do business with @seattlespeedometer. Most of you know me and know I am very mild mannered and do not get angry often. So for me to do this you know it was a nightmare.
