🗣 advocating for student demands across Seattle and WA State

The Seattle City Council voted to defund universal school meals. Twenty-four hours later they folded. All 49,000 SPS students eat free starting today.

The reversal took one day, and it took a lot of people who had never testified about anything in their lives showing up angry. That's the part worth remembering the next time something obvious gets voted down: the vote is not the end of the process unless you treat it as one.

$3.3 million in year one. A rounding error in a city budget, and every kid in Seattle eats.

It’s time we back our educators both at the bargaining table and in Olympia. Here are my thoughts in @urbanistorg on the potential strike and how we can support seattleea

The media will have you thinking teachers are asking for massive pay increases, they’re not. The folks bargaining are asking for smaller class sizes, resources for Special Education, and a livable wage for paraeducatos and IAs.

Tell the district to come back to the table and bargain in good faith.

The insidious legal logic of Trumps new attack in Birthright Citizenship:

- [ ] When the Supreme Court upheld birthright in June, the ruling used the phrase “extraterritorial fiction” to describe the very narrow, historical exceptions to birthright citizenship—such as children of foreign diplomats, invading armies, or sovereign tribal nations. These specific groups are legally treated as though (“fiction”) they are on foreign soil (“extraterritorial”).

- [ ] This order takes those words, which are not found in the constitution or any amendment, and says that if they can find a way to apply these words to the parents of any child, they can deny citizenship to that child.

- [ ] The order lists specific circumstances such as parents who are employed by a foreign government or affiliated with a foreign terrorist organization. If even a narrow reading of this order is accepted by the courts, this could lead to the mass denial of citizenship status along with potential denaturalization proceedings. But importantly, the order says that this list of circumstances is “non-exhaustive.” This opens the door to extraordinary powers - and Stephen Miller is already telling you this means “large categories” of people who allegedly “act on behalf of foreign governments,” terminology so broad it could include posting a talking point that aligns with the interests of people outside the US.

It is imperative to act now, before this is all locked into place. Demand: Trump Must Go Now!

🚨this is only for changemakers🚨

Tomorrow, you can impact how much Seattle costs.

At 9:30a the Select Committee on the Families, Education, Preschool and Promise Levy could decide whether Seattle schools have universal breakfast and lunch.

Then at 2p the Housing, Arts, and Civil Rights Committee will further discuss the ban junk fees legislation.

JOIN US FOR THE SEATTLE PRIDE PARADE!

The Trans & Queer & Allied Youth Frontline Defense Council, a formation of member-leaders from the Washington Bus, are organizing a contingent of pro-LGBTQ+ youth organizations to march at the Seattle Pride Parade.

The Seattle Pride Parade is community-led, deeply rooted in activism, and unapologetically focused on LGBTQIA2S+ visibility. Every year, 300,000+ people gather in the streets, marching for joy, justice, and belonging.

Tomorrow morning we’ll be delivering a letter to @mayorofseattle and the @theseattlecouncil that’s signed by survivors, surviving family members, concerned community members, and multiple organizations demanding that permanent, independent resources be created for victims of police violence.

For too long victims have been silenced and ignored. Our trauma tokenized and our pain dismissed. We deserve support and care after we have been brutalized. And we will continue to demand that our humanity be recognized, but we can’t do it alone. We need community to push back against the mayor and city council’s refusal to meet our demands and center our lived experiences, not the police or the harmful accountability offices who continue to refuse to hold police accountable and obstruct resources for impacted communities.

Our Demands:
- By the end of April 2026: For the Mayor and Seattle City Council to create a timeline (with monthly reporting) of ongoing meetings with victims of police violence to discuss the creation of permanent resources and the removal of those who have been barriers to police accountability.

- By the end of September 2026: Based on the prior meetings, implement a permanent city-wide office or department dedicated to providing direct resources to victims of police violence.

These demands are not only feasible, but they allow the city over 5 months to meet them. There is no other reason for the city’s resistance besides likely influence from the police who seek to dismiss the pain they cause.

It’s not too late for you or your organization to support victims and sign the letter before we deliver it to the mayor and city council!

Sign and share the letter demanding Mayor Katie Wilson and the Seattle City Council go beyond lip service and create tangible and material change for communities impacted by police violence.

Our Demands:
- By the end of April 2026: For the Mayor and Seattle City Council to create a timeline (with monthly reporting) of ongoing meetings with victims of police violence to discuss the creation of permanent resources and the removal of those who have been barriers to police accountability.

- By the end of September 2026: Based on the prior meetings, for the Mayor and Seattle City Council to implement a permanent city-wide office or department dedicated to providing direct resources to victims of police violence.

Victims and families deserve resources and care. Not more brutality and generational harm.
