Last week, Sebastian and I traveled to Colorado for the final days of Straighten Your Wig and Pray, an excellent survey of Arch Connelly‘s uniquely baroque art at the Aspen Art Museum. I first encountered Connelly‘s work as an intern at Charles Cowles Gallery and later acquired Fog at an auction. But we learned the most about Connelly from our shared, dear, and departed friend Yoko Mori, who sometimes assisted “Archie” and entrusted us with the embellished crucifix that inspired the exhibition title. Bravi to @stellabottai, @danielmerritt, @fabio_cherstich and the rest of the Aspen team for a smart and sexy show that combined material riches, conceptual rigor, and historical ephemera. There are many more installation shots on the AAM website and a 2027 catalog is eagerly anticipated. #archconnelly #aspenartmuseum

So blessed to be able to join the celebration of life for Lynn Conklin this weekend in Wainscot. ❤️She was an important pilar of my adolescence. Always offering a safe harbor, wonderful music and my first introduction to sushi! 🍣 Thank you @seblinyc for hosting me and being an inspirational and constant friend. I love you. Thank you Susan and Jennifer for including us. Treasured moments and memories. ❤️

You could be a housewife, a prom queen, the “protected sex”. But you are still not safe. You can use the roles that they project onto you to feel safer, but you are still not safe. You can wear the armor of the world’s expectations for you, but you are still not safe if trapped by the unconscious choice. The dissonance in life you sustain keeps others trapped because, in allowing your identity to be filled in, you're supporting the system that fed you this and an ideal that never existed, and never benefited you either. You thought it was the only option, but now you see there is always an option C. It’s your turn to decide. Free yourself, and then, join us as we fight to free all people.
Ps. Some see the impromptu art installation on the sidewalk meticulously placed to commemorate this day as litter. I urge you to see otherwise. This day has made history and this is collective community art by the people, for our movement, for OUR future. What formed organically in an explosion of overflowing trash is now a poignant metaphor. Find your ✨

🇺🇸 “Gene Momberger on the magical rooftop apt he shared with his boyfriend Kenny Zerelli next to the Chelsea Hotel. It was a secret penthouse that they paid nothing for, you took the elevator to the top floor then walked up a flight of stairs and you were in their secret wonderland, a boxy duplex in the middle of a private tree filled roof. When they went away David stayed there to water the plants which took about 2 hours a day. Tom McBride took this photo of David on the roof. One day Tom and David had a fight and went running out so I was left there alone and suddenly some weird guy appeared who I had to talk into leaving without robbing the apartment. I think of Gene when I pass that building and when I see the lions outside the NY Public Library where we sat to watch the Gay Pride Parade in the early 80’s. I met my roommate Mac through Gene. One day in the 90’s I was on a road trip and called into my answering machine and there was a message from Gene saying good-bye. I remember the rest stop and the feeling that went through my body, but I don’t remember if I was able to reach him to say good bye in person. My ghosts and memories will always live on in NYC. David McGrath (Mac) by Herb Ritts. Mac was David and my roommate in the early 80’s, I forget how David met him, maybe through Gene and Kenny, but he was a fun, cheerful presence, even when he had to dispose of Rocky, the baby squirrel I brought home who died in the bathtub. We stayed friends after he moved out and I still see him sometimes in LA, where he and his partner live, or on one of his rare visits to NYC. Mac was directing Jackie Curtis in her final show at LaMama, which was a nightmare and he came home in a fit every night, but the poster is still up in the LaMama lobby. Some of these photos are from the time we went across the Brooklyn Bridge with my parents who were visiting, (I remember there was no one else there), from a Halloween with David at Patrick McMullan’s, a couple of photos by our (and Gene and Kenny’s) friend Sebastian, including from a recent visit to LA, and a note he left me, because back then everyone left eachother notes. Wonderful Mac, another forever friend from David.
