It's the three-month birthday for my book, The Art of Looking Back: A painter, an obsession, and reclaiming the gaze (Thornapple Press). As I sit at my desk, remembering the wild ride of writing it, editing it, receiving cover iterations, designed pages, I am so grateful -- to Thornapple Press and everyone there, to the readers who've responded in so many ways, and to the young woman who inspired me to pay attention to her almost 50 years later.
********************
Turn, I will ask the young poet with flowers in her hair, you who have kept a certain privacy for decades, watching me descend the stairs, you who also watched me climb them, weary or joyous or lost in thought. I carried sorrow up the stairs and down them too. I felt your gaze in the ascent and the descent. Watch me. Watch me open my hands, releasing the shame I carried, hidden mostly but always a weight, an unnecessary guilt. I took off my clothes and I am commemorated with Cadmium Yellow lightened with Flake White, Alizarin Crimson, Prussian Blue, Viridian, Chrome Green. The warm light shimmering with Titanium Buff, Yellow Ochre. My hair, Thalo Blue, Thalo Green, Alizarin Crimson, Indian Yellow, underlayered with transparent yellow. On the Irish island, I walked on the rocks in grey mist and wrapped my arms around my body to contain myself. “Let a body venture at last.” At last I am at least unwrapping the veil, shaking the words from its fine gauze. What happens next, happens. There is no one now to hold me in that fierce gaze, as dangerous as it was loving.

1. Some deer sketches. I started without looking at a reference photo just to see what would arise, and tried to keep it loose even once I pulled up a photo.

2. The bounty of books I got from @secheltlibrary today, and my salad at dinner. I made an effort!
And mused about the days when the internet was simpler and people posted more photos of their day or their dinner, without the pressures of *waves hand* everything about the algorithms.
I read some Linda Barry. I forgot how much I loved Marlys & co! And mused some more about Before Times.

I got my sample notebook. Mostly happy with it! I’ll post a video of it shortly.

Day number 3390 in my commitment to make and share daily.

What a beautiful day of culture, connection, and celebration on shíshálh swiya yesterday for National Indigenous Peoples Day and the opening of syíyaya Days.

ʔulnumshchalap (Thank you all) to everyone who attended, volunteered, shared teachings, and helped create such a welcoming atmosphere. It was inspiring to see so many people come together to celebrate the rich culture and history of our shíshálh Nation and our beautiful swiya (birthplace, land, “territory”).

The celebration continues! syíyaya Days runs from June 21–July 1, with more opportunities to learn, connect, and participate. Be sure to pick up a copy of the Coast Reporter and check out the special National Indigenous Peoples Day section highlighting local stories, culture, and community events.

Join us on Friday, June 26 for a free presentation on the tutulshenam Healing House project at the Sechelt Public Library. Learn about this culturally grounded healing and recovery centre being developed by the shíshálh Nation.

A few years ago I found a folio of letters and other materials in my file cabinet, reminding me of an intense relationship with an artist, not forgotten, because his paintings hang in my house, but time had buried some of the old pain. I spent a winter re-reading the letters, revisiting that time, and I wrote a book, The Art of Looking Back: A painter, an obsession, and reclaiming the gaze. Today is its publication day! Thank you, Thornapple Press, for making such a beautiful object, and thanks to those who've already read my book and reviewed it, written to me, and thanks to the Sechelt Library for hosting a book launch today at 1pm. Thanks to Talewind Books for book sales!

The Art of Looking Back is almost here! In this poetic memoir, @theresakishkan not only looks back at young adulthood and her relationship with artist Jack Wilkinson, but also asks questions about older men and younger women and girls and the persistence of that dynamic in art.

In celebration of the release, Theresa will be visiting bookstores and libraries in Ottawa and coastal BC. Join us at the one closest to you!

And, in other news…Front page of the local paper, the little library is retiring its check out stamp and starting a new book box delivery. If the book you requested is checked out, they’ll personally select a similar genre you might just like. All volunteers. If you are looking for a sign that the world is full of good people and good books, this is it. #littlelibrary #library #bookstagram #librarygram

A little POP of colour and fun was added to the Sechelt Public Library for their youngest readers.
The amazing director at the Library envisioned a splash of colour for the children's area - a space that nurtures imagination and discovery.
Being a part of this was a wonderful opportunity, inspired by a great team.
Thanks to ALL of you at the Sechelt Public Library for your faith in me!
