POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

The sun was just breaking over the trees as we rolled by Second Drop Farm, a sea of colorful flowers layered like folded blankets across the horizon.

“COFFEE HOUSE” read a large, hand-painted sign in big black letters. We’d come to the right place. Chickens darted around the cafe, cautiously optimistic that someone might drop a piece of muffin or croissant.

Inside, Patrick emerged from behind a black curtain separating the kitchen from the register. We ordered a breakfast sandwich and coffee and listened as he told us about the history of the farm.

It had once been owned by the Bradleys, a name I recognized from the history of the Stone School cottage where April and I were staying. In 1777, British and Hessian troops captured at Saratoga passed through Lanesborough on their way to Boston and spent the night at the William Bradley farm.

As the story goes, the officers hid a chest of gold in the farmhouse’s Dutch oven. Sometime during the night, someone pulled apart part of the chimney and made off with it. The culprits were never found, but the Bradleys became noticeably more prosperous afterward, sparking a local legend that some of that stolen Revolutionary War gold eventually helped pay for Lanesborough’s Stone School and local church.

After breakfast, April and I headed outside, where the chickens immediately gathered.

“Can you give a piece of an egg to a chicken?” April asked, a little weirded out by the premise.

“Oh, for sure,” I said, remembering my early twenties when my friend Todd and I raised chickens in downtown Westfield. “Trust me, they eat anything.”

We crouched down, feeding them pieces of bagel and bacon before wandering toward the flowers. Each row was naturally but intentionally separated, like the bottles of colored sand I used to make as a kid at the town fair.

“Stand there, my love,” I told April, stepping a row away with my camera.

I had my wide lens, which I’m not really partial to, but it helped take it all in. A nip in the air, the leaves wanting to turn but waiting for a head nod from a true cold snap.

I snapped the picture.

“Perfect.”

Today we went blueberry picking and Sel ate SO MANY BLUEBERRIES. We also spotted a few raspberry bushes which was such a surprise. I do think Sel's favorite part was all the chickens roaming around.

What should we do with all these blueberries? I mean realistically she's going to just eat them all. 💀
