Mothers without Hands transforms ancient archetypes into contemporary tools, using storytelling to bridge individual trauma with a collective, unifying strength.  1. Mothers without Hands, video 2025 Mothers without Hands video consists of a combination of slow-motion scenes and tableaux vivants. Evading exact periodisation, Mothers without Hands combines performance and pageantry and pagan and religious customs, as well as highlighting the conjunction between reality and artifice, civic clothing and folk costume, joy and solemnity, youth and age, urban and rural settings, enabling it to function as a mythic history unbound by time. 2. Bread Woman costume, including gloves, textiles, wool, ceremonial bread, 2025 Mothers without Hands demonstrates Bušková’s commitment to the exploration of the role of women – as, among other things, artists, protagonists, sisters, mothers and muses – and to the celebration of feminine energy and often unacknowledged female labour. 3. Mothers’ costumes and crowns, textiles, metal, mirrors, beads, wire, 2025 Bušková’s reinterpretation of the Czech custom Ježíškovy matičky(Beloved Mothers of Christ) saw the ‘Madonnas’ who traditionally lead the ceremony reconceived as ‘Mothers’ in remembrance of the pregnant women who, during the Great Northern War (1700-1721), processed in protest against being raped. 4. Mothers without Hands, video 2025 In addition, the Christ sculpture carried as part of the original ritual was replaced in Bušková’s procession in Prague – celebrative of Mothers’ Day – by a large collectively baked and delicately braded Sklenovska Matička (Beloved Mother). Made from leaven dough traditionally used to make ceremonial bread, the Matička was wheeled by a male member of the Suchdol community @radost_suchdol on a small goods cart, also used to convey the artist’s muse @misszoesimon who was dressed as an ethereal spirit, representing feminine energy. 5. Tereza Bušková, Mothers without Hands, curated by Dr Nicola Baird @nickyjbaird. It was co-designed and collectively decorated during workshops at @aaina.c.hub together with artivist Margaret Murray and natural fibre weaver @phi.weaves using designs and symbols resonant of the participating women’s identity, experiences and culture. Fabricated by @theweldenstudio and @dean.karl.wellings Slide 4: Escargot Holders of Solace, date unknown ceramic Referred to by Bušková as Escargot Holders of Solace, these found domestic objects are for the artist characterised by enigmatic, totemic power. Carried by young girls and women during the procession in Erdington, Birmingham they are symbols of defiance central to project’s aim to raise awareness of violence against women.

Today I have been thinking about a question @georgevasey asked me three years ago. He asked me me whether my work was an attempt to be vulnerable with the viewer. At the time, I answered that my emotional state seeps into the work. Today - I would say that I don’t think vulnerability is something I put into my work. I think it’s something I make space for. In myself, in the materials and in the viewer too. Vulnerability isn’t the opposite of strength, but one of the ways we can reach it. @section_8 For the beautiful image of my collapsed jelly. #jelly #jellymoulds #vulnerabilty #questionsthatstick #artistcuratorconversation

Sad not to be @bompasandparr international jelly festival today. Wishing everyone a wobbling good time! I’ll be celebrating all things Jelly from Birmingham this weekend instead, continuing my obsession with sculptural jellies and the bespoke moulds I design and make for them. I’ll be deep in the studio developing a new body of jelly-based work, so I’ll be marking the occasion in suitably wobbly fashion. 🍮 Here are some of the moulds and jellies I made as part of @artsheritage working with the amazing @middleport_pottery with @rebeccaloughhead192 and in collaboration with Stoke on Trent’s community. #woobleandgrind #internationaljellyday #wobbles #jellyrenaissance #jellymoulds

It was great working with @craftspace_ on their touring exhibition Made in the Middle. The show drew together 37 artists whose work highlights the innovative contemporary crafts being made in the Midlands today. The artists represent the region’s vibrant and diverse creative community and include both emerging talents and established names. The wide range of objects, materials, skills, processes and techniques on display provide inspiration for anyone interested in making, seeing or buying craft. Growing up in the Midlands myself, it was a pleasure to respond to a brief celebrating the rich heritage and positive impact of diversity and migration in the region. - Design included exhibition identity, 2D design, marketing and accompanying catalogue (pictured). With a focus on materials and sustainability, the show build was made from previous builds. - The exhibition is the ninth in the Made in the Middle series and toured to galleries across the Midlands through 2025 and into 2026.
