#filmfriday…I feel like everyone on earth has seen the 1977 Japanese horror film #Hausu aka House. It’s so inspirational, that in addition to being in the Criterion collection, it has inspired clothes, perfume, and a myriad of artists (included in this carousel).
Ostensibly the story of seven schoolgirls (with names like Gorgeous, Kung Fu, Melody, and Fantasy) off to visit a long-lost aunt in the country, the plot quickly derails into kind of a ghost/possession story with a lot of inappropriate dynamics and a few tiny boobie shots.
But what Hausu does well is the kind of bonkers low-fi chroma key special effects that are so adorable to see in the wake of AI slop. Give me spinning heads, legs, and 👄 any day of the week!
I don’t want to give too much away as you really gotta see it for yourself, but I was shocked to learn it didn’t get a wide release in the US until 2009!
More surreal than scary, it’s a feast for the eyes even if the plot makes zero sense (my fave kinda 🎞️). Bon appetite! 🐱#31daysofhalloween
