CAN YOU OWN A PLANT AND ITS HISTORY? For generations, people have cultivated, preserved, shared, and passed down knowledge about cannabis. Long before there were licensed markets, patents, trademarks, or billion-dollar companies, there were people keeping plants and their stories alive. Today, cannabis has commercial value, scientific value, and cultural value. Yet some important questions remain. Who owns the genetics? Who benefits from the knowledge passed down through generations? Who gets to tell the story? At Humboldt Grace, we’ve spent years exploring these questions through the @humboldt.legacy.project , combining science, historical documentation, and community knowledge. We’ve learned that protecting a plant and protecting its history aren’t necessarily the same thing. So we’re asking you: Can you own a plant and its history? We want to hear from growers, breeders, patients, researchers, consumers, and anyone who has a relationship with this plant. 👇 What do you think? 🌱 Follow @humboldtgrace as we explore cannabis ethics, science, culture, and the people behind the plant. 🔗 Explore our research at HumboldtGrace.org #HumboldtGrace #CannabisCulture #CannabisHistory #CannabisGenetics #CannabisEthics #HumboldtLegacyProject #HumboldtCounty #CannabisResearch #PlantHeritage #EmeraldTriangle

The HLP Skunk #1 Case Study Report is still available. It is one piece of a larger body of work from the Humboldt Grace @humboldt.legacy.project , work that brings together preservation, history, science, cultivation, analytical testing, community knowledge, consumer feedback, and ethics. As this Skunk #1 report series comes to a close, we are moving into what comes next: Community + Industry Ethics Report Public Safety Ethics Report The Synthesis Report (working title) Each piece adds to the larger record. Together, they help us ask better questions about how we honor the plant, the people, and the culture. THE FARMS BEHIND THE DATA. 🌱 The HLP Skunk #1 Grow-Off was built with the participation of multiple cultivators who agreed to grow the same shared plant and contribute information to the research. Love & Grace weren’t just our values. They were how this work survived. Our ethical standards. For six years, the Humboldt Legacy Project brought together people who did not always speak the same language — legacy knowledge holders, farmers, scientists, laboratories, technology partners, businesses, advocates, and community members. There was no big grant holding it all together. There was respect. Trust. Listening. Love & Grace. We learned that collaboration doesn’t require everyone to think the same way. It requires respecting what each person brings to the table — and being willing to listen to each other, and to the plant. That is how a community-led project with almost no funding kept moving for six years. And it is also why we believe access to this work matters. If the cost of the full HLP Skunk #1 Case Study Report is a barrier, we created a waiver so it was accessible for anyone to read . We want the knowledge created through this work to come back to the people and communities who helped make it possible. That’s why we copyrighted it. Fill out the waiver. Read the report. WHY A WAIVER FOR A FREE REPORT? Because this project was about more than studying Skunk #1. It was also about asking a bigger question: How can communities document, share and learn from their own knowledge—without watching that knowledge get extracted, repackaged and turned into value somewhere else? We’ve seen that cycle happen too many times. Community knowledge becomes data. Data becomes value. And the community that helped create it can be left behind. We wanted to try something different. The Humboldt Legacy Project was built through years of shared knowledge, donated expertise, cultivation, testing, research, technology, time and community participation. So we believe the value created from that work should remain connected to the people and community that helped make it possible. That’s why we’re offering complimentary copies of the full HLP Skunk #1 Case Study Report through a simple waiver. The report is copyrighted—not to keep people from learning from it. Read it. Learn from it. Talk about it. Teach from it. But if the report, its data, methodology or findings are used to create commercial value, we ask that Humboldt Grace and the project receive proper credit and, where appropriate, that the use be licensed. The waiver helps us protect that distinction. Because community empowerment isn’t just about preserving knowledge. It’s about protecting a community’s ability to participate in the value its knowledge creates. That was part of the project, too. Want a complimentary copy of the full report? Fill out the waiver form at the link in bio and we’ll send it to you. 💜 Please share this with someone who should have a copy. Why did we do it this way? Because this was never just about one plant. For six years, the Humboldt Legacy Project followed a simple idea: listen to the people, follow the evidence, and let the plant speak. We worked across layers—preservation and registration, DNA-supported lineage research, cultivation research, laboratory testing, consumer research, historical research, and legacy knowledge—to ask what could be learned when community, science, history, and the plant were allowed to inform one another. And we did it with just $1,463 in direct funding. That number is important—but not because this work was only worth $1,463. It shows how much was contributed by the people who made it possible: growers, scientists, laboratories, researchers, advisors, consumers, knowledge holders, partners, and community members who shared their time, expertise, experience, and trust. The real investment was the community. That is also why we believe the value created by this work should come back to the community. If the cost of the full HLP Skunk #1 Case Study Report is keeping you from accessing it, please apply for a fee waiver. If you participated in this work, we especially want you to have access. And if you are able to purchase the report or make a donation, your support helps Humboldt Grace continue this work and build pathways that protect knowledge, preserve legacy, and create value for cannabis legacy communities. SAME GENETICS. DIFFERENT EXPRESSION. When we put HLP Skunk #1 No. 3 into the hands of different growers, we weren’t trying to prove that one cultivation method was better than another. We wanted to see what the plant would show us. Across the primary Grow-Off samples, Total THC ranged from 8.88% to 25.35%. But THC wasn’t the only thing that varied. When we looked deeper into the cannabinoid profiles, something else became interesting: Some minor cannabinoids were detectable in plants from some farms and not detected in others. Same preserved plant. Different cultivation environments. Different chemical expressions. This was not a controlled experiment, so we cannot say that a particular environment or cultivation practice caused a particular result. But the variation gives us something important to investigate. Because if we judge cannabis primarily by genetics and THC percentage, what else are we missing? The minor cannabinoids are only one part of it. We also looked at terpenes, cultivation conditions—and eventually compounds connected to one of Skunk #1’s most famous characteristics: its aroma. That is where this story gets even more interesting. The graph here shows one layer. The report connects the layers. THEN WE LET THE PLANT SPEAK. We documented its history, gave the plants working names, took steps to protect the record, and examined the genetics. But DNA could only tell us part of the story. So we added another layer: cultivation. HLP Skunk #1 No. 3 went into the hands of growers across different farms, environments and cultivation approaches. 29 registered. 11 usable cultivation records returned. 10 samples received laboratory COAs. We weren’t looking for everyone to produce the same result. We were listening. What changed? What stayed consistent? What could the chemistry tell us—and what could we learn from the growers? The genetics were shared. The expression was not identical. Thank you to every grower who participated, including those who chose to remain private, and to the seven who agreed to be publicly acknowledged: @seed707_llc • @fenariofarms0420 • @truemomandpop • @empressfarms • @solspiritfarm • @talkingtrees.humboldt • @savage__farms__humboldt_co You didn’t just grow the plant. You helped us listen to it. Over the next several posts, we’ll share what the plant showed us. DNA GAVE US ANOTHER LAYER — AND ANOTHER LAYER OF PROTECTION. Once we had begun establishing chain of custody, we were ready to send plant material to Medicinal Genomics. The question wasn’t simply, “Can DNA prove this is Skunk #1?” It was: What can genetics add to the record, and how can that record help protect what has been preserved? The testing gave us DNA-supported lineage evidence and a genetic reference for the HLP Skunk #1 selections. That matters because once a genetic record exists, there is something to compare back to. If a name changes hands, a plant is mislabeled, material is lost, or someone later makes a claim about what they have, the genetics provide another piece of evidence that can be examined alongside provenance and chain of custody. In that way, DNA becomes more than identification. It becomes part of preservation and protection. But we were also careful not to ask DNA to do more than it can. A DNA result by itself does not prove that a plant is “the original Skunk #1,” establish ownership, or replace the people and history connected to the plant. It is one layer. Chain of custody protects the path.
DNA helps protect the genetic record.
History protects the story. Together, they make it much harder for the plant, the name, and the people who carried it to become separated from one another. The record was built one layer at a time. #HumboldtLegacyProject #HumboldtGrace #HLPSkunk1 #Skunk1 #CannabisGenetics #CannabisDNA #MedicinalGenomics #GeneticStewardship #CannabisPreservation #LegacyCannabis #CannabisHistory #CommunityLedResearch #CannabisScience #EmeraldTriangle #ProtectTheLegacy

THE NAMES CAME FIRST When two preserved Skunk #1 selections entered the Humboldt Legacy Project in 2020, we needed a practical way to tell them apart and track them through the work. So we gave them study identifiers: HLP Skunk #1 No. 1 HLP Skunk #1 No. 3 Those names were never meant to declare new cultivars or prove identity. They were simply a documentation tool. And that raises another important question: What is Skunk #1? Skunk #1 is better understood as a historic seed line, not one single plant or one perfectly uniform modern cultivar. Over decades, seeds carrying the Skunk #1 name have been reproduced, selected, preserved and grown by different people. The plants in our project were individual preserved selections associated with that historic seed line. We did not breed Skunk #1. We did not create a new cultivar. And HLP Skunk #1 No. 1 and No. 3 were not intended to become cultivar names. So why does the report sometimes use the word cultivar? For practical communication. “Cultivar” is familiar language in the cannabis industry, so we sometimes used it where more technical wording could make the work harder to follow. But when we are being precise, selection is the better description for these plants. That distinction became part of the lesson. A name can help us follow a plant. It cannot tell us everything about it. That is why we kept adding layers: provenance, preservation, DNA-supported lineage research, herbarium documentation, registration, chemistry, cultivation, consumer research, history and community knowledge. The names helped us follow the plants.
The research helped us understand what those names could — and could not — tell us. The record was built one layer at a time. #HumboldtLegacyProject #HumboldtGrace #Skunk1 #CannabisHistory #CannabisGenetics #CannabisResearch #LegacyCannabis #CannabisEducation #PlantGenetics #CannabisCulture #CommunityLedResearch #CannabisPreservation #GeneticStewardship #CannabisLegacy #CannabisScience #HumboldtCannabis #EmeraldTriangle #Cultivar #PlantLineage #CannabisCommunity

THE CANNABIS ETHICS SURVEY IS CLOSING. THE WORK IS CONTINUING. Today at 5:00 PM PDT, we close the Cannabis Ethics Survey. The Ethics Survey and the HLP Skunk #1 Case Study Report are two separate projects coming together. The survey asked a broad question: What values, concerns, responsibilities, and ethical principles should help guide the future of cannabis? The Skunk #1 case study looks deeply at one community-led project through genetics, history, cultivation, science, stewardship, and culture. Different work. Different methods. But increasingly, I can see how much they have to teach us together. Because I don’t believe genetics alone can stabilize this industry. Policy alone isn’t doing it. Business alone cannot do it. And legacy knowledge cannot simply be remembered while the systems around it move on without it. What I am beginning to see is a framework: Legacy knowledge helps us understand where we came from and what communities learned through lived experience. Genetic understanding helps us better understand the plant, its diversity, and what science can—and cannot—tell us. Ethical guidelines help us decide how that knowledge is used, who benefits, who is protected, who receives credit, and who is accountable. Together, those pieces may give us a much stronger foundation for what comes next. So while the survey is closing, the questions are not. In many ways, we are finally getting to the part I have been trying to understand all along: How do we carry cannabis forward without leaving its knowledge, its people, or its responsibilities behind? Thank you to every person who took the survey, shared a story, challenged an idea, contributed knowledge, or helped us get here. Separate projects. Shared purpose. The plant gave us a case study. The community gave us a mandate. Now we start putting the pieces together. Culture Defines Ethics. Ethics Protect Culture. #CannabisEthics #HumboldtLegacyProject #HumboldtGrace #CannabisLegacy #CannabisGenetics #CannabisResearch #CannabisPolicy #LegacyCannabis #EthicalCannabis #HumboldtCounty
