One year ago I left journalism to help with storytelling at @davidprizenyc 🙂‍↕️ The Prize funds five New Yorkers every year with $200K to further their innovative idea for NYC. It’s been surreal to get to learn so much more about a place I care so deeply about. I’ve written profiles on some of the most impressive New Yorkers, hosted dinner parties to discuss complex questions facing the city, traveled across the boroughs with @seenycofficial, made silly videos with @ginabygina, @john_the_robot & @e_n_y_c and SO much more. There are countless people doing the most imperative work for this city and I have hope for the future because of every single one of them 💛

Some moments are about SO much more than mac & cheese.

Over the weekend, neighbors came together for The Mac-n-Cheese Smackdown—a fun community-building concept I dreamed up to create connection, bring people together, and, of course, have a little friendly competition! 😋🏆

I’m grateful to @seenycofficial for believing in the idea and providing the grant that helped make it happen.

We had three judges select their favorite, AND our neighbors got to have their say with the “Neighbor Favorite” award. And let me tell you… Lindsey @lindustrial_ came through with a LANDSLIDE victory in BOTH categories! 🏆🏆👏🏾

But honestly, the biggest win was seeing neighbors show up, laugh, share, connect, and celebrate one another.

That’s what community is supposed to feel like. ❤️

Grateful for the people around me—and especially for the friendships and connections we’ve forged along the way.

Shoutout to my block association @montgomeryblockassociationinc and our president @x_sunkissedkris for the care and dedication we take to continue the traditions and create new initiatives that include all of our neighbors.

Good food. Good people. Great community. THAT’S the real victory. 🙌🏾

When I started all this, I wanted to shift the mindset of my Dominican culture, not just the youth and the current hood legends, but the OGs, and the elders to whom mental health & mobility seemed like a foreign concept. Then that same eagerness transitioned to influencing every person I came across.

Luckily I have been really busy this Mental Health Awareness Month, and as I look in my camera roll I can only say one thing … We did that, and here we are 10 years later post pneumothorax telling that story.

The David Prize joined over 150 New Yorkers last week for See NYC, now in its second year, and it reminded us exactly how special this city is, and why it’s New Yorkers that make it so.

We explored Staten Island, Queens, Chinatown, and FiDi. We stayed at a hotel steps from the Oculus and the 9/11 Memorial - hearing directly from the architects who brought those spaces to life. We made the kind of connections you can’t plan for and that continue long beyond the three days spent together.

This year I set an intention to turn inward and learn about local leadership and how the city runs. @seenycofficial, powered by @breakout and @davidprizenyc, is a magic school bus style 3-day field trip to different boroughs designed for New York leaders.

Together with 120 other builders, funders, storytellers and passion project full timers operating across grassroots organizing, philanthropy, housing, media, culture, finance and tech; we learned to ask ourselves, “What is your influence?”

We learned from the best in the field, and were reminded of the many faces of New York City:

New York is immigrant mamas that worked three jobs to make rent (shoutout to my mom!). It is home to ~180 unicorns, making it the second largest tech hub. Yet also where ~20% of residents don’t have internet connectivity. There is a 250,000+ waitlist on NYCHA housing when they are already in a $70B deficit. NYC is home of the dollar slice. And over 800 languages. So roughly 800 types of cuisines. The city is also Miss Pat who brought reggae into the west, Staten Island volunteer group that arranges walking tours, educators that focus on AI literacy for youth, and curators who elevate local businesses while keeping the museums current. The list goes on. The federal reserve is the largest known depository of monetary gold. The epicenter of global banking, host of two largest stock exchanges. The most heavily funded municipal police department in the world. Also the fashion capital of the americas. Biggest media moguls, MAD men. NYT Bestsellers. A VC panel said if silicon valley is good at building underlying tech infra, new york city is good at applying the tech. And you can see social proof when talent is leaving the west coast to build their companies where they wanna live. Yet at the same time, nearly 5 million residents are at or below the poverty line.

The dichotomy of this city is unlike any other. And there are social equity advocates fighting tooth and nail to reduce the widening wealth gap. I’m leaving with a reality check and I’m also leaving inspired (to move back!). Most of all, as someone else put it, I’m leaving a more curious person.

We were incredibly honored to host a panel at @seenycofficial this past week celebrating the power and impact of great teaching across New York City. Held at the @stgeorgetheatre on Staten Island, the conversation brought together educators and leaders from across the city to discuss what it takes to identify, support, and sustain excellence in teaching.
