Zendara opened the letter of her father one last time, steadied her breath and read aloud.

“The dark deeds of devils are decided along the edge of sharpened blades.
Slow, shuffled steps taken one after slow other until cut and bloodied feet fail and the inevitable fall from grace begins.
For some the drop is sheer where others the descent into darkness will take time.
This you must know Zendara, it is not a matter of if, or even a matter of when, but how? How one lands, amid the cold inky dark, that is the true question. Will you land on both your feet or will you flounder in the icy murk?
Either way, dear child, the deeds remain and we are the devils to do them. Best do them well.”

Zendara let go the letter and it drifted out over the rapids and was lost. She held out her father’s sword, it’s sharpened edge glittering bright in the moon’s glow.
“No Father, my inevitable fall will not begin, not now, not ever, for I choose not step out on this sharp edge.”
She let go. The sword was gone, just like her fathers words, lost in the cold dark waters.
