Meet our Director of Technology, Christopher Strawley!

From a Nintendo nerd (said with love) to NYU to Mercer Labs, Christopher has a lifetime of experience using technology in inventive and memorable ways.

At Cobblestone Labs, he melds his passion and skillset to help us create bespoke, immersive AI experiences.

While we hope he likes us as much as we like him, he might just be in it for our fridge stocked with Dr. Pepper Creamy Coconut…

Thank you to all who attended last week’s DTC workshop! 💫

Additional thanks to our thoughtful instructors @lisajamhoury & @seestrawrun and NYU Tandon at The Yard @idmnyu for the incredible space and technical support.

Highlights for us:

*Group play with sensors! We worked with 3 volunteer performers in motion capture suits, while additional participants were invited to play with “rigid bodies” (sensor tracked objects, as opposed to the suits’ flexible, free flowing tracking). This led to interactive play where artists could become light sources, steer the camera’s point of view, and more.

*Learning about how Lisa integrates storytelling into her work, specifically in her piece “Maquette.” This live performance explores the human individuality we risk losing in the rapid virtualization of everyday life. The work was partially inspired by the unsettling story of “Norma,” a statue created in the 1940s to represent the average woman, though modeled only after white women ages 21–25, excluding most women by age, race, and body type. “Maquette” explores the notion of averaging, a mechanism used in software and machine learning that has been shown to make false assumptions about individuals, especially regarding neurodiversity, race, and gender.

*For the workshop, the DTC researched various mo-cap systems and more specifically how/if AI is integrated into the OptiTrack → Unreal Engine workflow. The gist for curious minds: there are AI options in Unreal Engine, but the user can choose if they want to opt in. The standard OptiTrack → Unreal workflow does not require/use generative AI or AI assisted tracking to function. DM us if you’d like to learn about other mo-cap systems we’re researching and things we’re considering when approaching these systems.

Want to change people?
Change their environment.

At this week’s motion capture workshop at @idmnyu, co-hosted by our Director of Technology, Christopher Strawley (@seestrawrun) and movement artist @lisajamhoury, dancers wore @optitrack suits while participants used tracked markers to create avatars and effects in @unrealengine.

When avatars touched hands, sparks flew. Literally.

When avatars donned “headlamps”, dancers started “searching”.

Humans have always danced. Now? Environments can move with them.

That’s the insight we’re bringing into our Lab: responsive spaces don’t just visualize behavior. They shape it.

Artist Bio: Lisa Jamhoury is a Lebanese-American artist creating live performances, installations, and physical media. She creates and directs cinematically rich, embodied experiences that recenter human agency in the digital age. Drawing from her backgrounds in contemporary circus, somatics, and experience design, Lisa brings embodied intelligence to her work as a software programmer. She moves fluidly across platforms, code bases, and tools treating technology itself as choreographic material. A specialist in motion capture from high-end studio systems to low-cost experimental tools, she translates the nuance of human movement into responsive digital environments where bodies and machines converse.

Lisa is an Interdisciplinary Fellow with the Royal Shakespeare Company and artist in residence with EY Intelligent Realities Lab. Her performance Maquette was a 2025 Lumen Prize Performance and Music finalist, and her spatial audio installation loss·y recently premiered at SXSW 2026.

Many many thanks to @maryjohnfrank and @dancetechcollective for inviting me to teach their inaugural Motion Capture Workshop! 🤸🏾✨

Repost from @dancetechcollective

THANK YOU to everyone who joined us for @lisajamhoury’s Motion Capture Workshop! 🤸🏾✨

Artists & technicians, Lisa Jamhoury & Christopher Strawley created an engaging, thoughtful workshop covering the history of motion capture, the Optitrack to Unreal workflow, Lisa’s artistic practice, and their collaborations.

We look forward to creating more spaces for dancers, technicians, and artists to gather! The next workshop will focus on the Kinect (more in bio). 🎨💻

This sold out and subsidized workshop was made possible by donations via @thefieldnyc as well as Integrated Design & Media @ Tandon School of Engineering, @winslowturnerporteriii and Todd Bryant.

Major gratitude for production support from @lizhasinstagram, Tommy Martinez, and volunteers:

We are very excited to share Yam’s Happy Tail! Yams is now named Harley and his dads @seestrawrun and @matt_hoyle158 say:

“He’s loving his new home here in Hoboken. We renamed him Harley for Harlem, since that’s where he was adopted. He loves walks and lots of rubs and love. He’s just the best dog. We love him very very much. ”

Consider adopting a frosted face to warm your heart during the winter cold. Visit nycacc.app to browse hundreds of available NYC pets waiting to find their furever home!

We currently have waived adoption fees throughout February for our dogs who prefer to be your one and only pet! Visit nycacc.org/singlelife to learn more about the promotion details as well as the available candidates.
