AMOEBA / 核
A film by Tan Siyou 24 October · Genesis Cinema, London
With @bunbites_screening Director Siyou Tan will join an online Q&A after the film, moderated by Dr Shzr Ee Tan (Royal Holloway, University of London). A lion’s head, a fish’s body. What other shapes might a girl take? In Tan Siyou’s AMOEBA, four misfits at an all-girls school form a secret gang. Borrowing stories and rituals from an older generation of gangsters, they begin to imagine other ways of belonging. In her director’s statement, Tan recalls growing up with the feeling that “the shape was already decided for me.” School was preparing her for roles she had not chosen. Among friends, however, other possibilities emerged: girls could call one another brothers, invent their own loyalties, and find intimacy beyond the futures prescribed for them. What draws us to AMOEBA is the unruly energy of trying things out. Friendship, attraction and identification brush up against one another. Wanting someone can become entangled with wanting to be like them. Playing a role can become a way of discovering what else you might be. The Merlion’s hybrid body offers a playful entry into these questions. A creature assembled from different forms becomes a familiar national symbol; the girls growing up within that nation are expected to follow much narrower paths. What happens when they begin making up stories of their own? We bring AMOEBA into Revolutionary Girls to explore how girls borrow, perform and remake the roles available to them and how growing up might include having a say in the shape of your own life. ⏰ Saturday 24 October, 18:20 📍 Genesis Cinema, 93–95 Mile End Road, London E1 4UJ

“Does the Merlion really exist?” In Amoeba, the latest coming-of-age film from Singapore, four girls at an elite school ask exactly this question. Director Siyou Tan’s debut feature portrays a fluid and rebellious girlhood. The girls defend their right to nap, explore caves, form a girl gang, and try to catch a ghost on a DV camera. Together, these moments stir something restless within a neat and orderly Singaporean school. Bun Bites Screening will screen Amoeba on 10.24, exploring the many different forms of girlhood. Movie of the Day: Amoeba In the end, “Amoeba” may be somewhat rough around the edges, reflecting its status as a debut, but Siyou Tan communicates her themes with clarity. With strong performances, accomplished visuals, and an engaging exploration of adolescence under pressure, the work remains consistently intriguing from beginning to end. What are your thoughts on the film? Click on the link in the first comment to read our review. @asianmoviepulse #singaporeancinema
