This past Saturday, Mohilef Studios (@mohilefstudios) founder Canyon Castator (@canyon_castator) hosted an incredible walkthrough of studio visits through his turquoise-colored artist co-op.

We were thrilled to hear from artists Devon DeJardin (@devondejardin), Bari Ziperstein (@bariziperstein), Nicole Ryder (@nicoleryderstudio), Ruth Pastine (@ruth_pastine), Liz Markus (@lizmarkusstudio), Fritz Chesnut (@fritzchesnutstudio), Carley Gmitro (@carleygmitro), Seffa Klein (@seffaklein), and Tim Irani (@timirani) about their practices in their studios.

Canyon shared that moving to L.A. following years of living and working in New York and Germany as an artist showed him there was a true need for an artist-owned and operated building with studios that would advocate for the rights of its tenants.

Castator is now in the process of opening his third building in Los Angeles, and the occupants of the two current Mohlief Studio buildings feel that there is a great sense of community and camaraderie among them that counteracts the often isolating experience of artmaking. From sharing supplies to grabbing group dinners, Mohlief tenants find their group chat to be a centralized place where they can all stay connected and share resources.

Studio roundups! June and July have flown by.

Seffa @seffaklein turned 30 last week and her beautiful solo show at @wildingcran is closing this week.
She is the brightest light, the kindest, most sincere, thoughtful, brilliant, disciplined, hardest working, and impeccable person I have ever known.

Hilde Helphenstein shuffled off this mortal coil just over a month ago and it seems impossible that she is gone. She was such a giant, a GREAT SOUL, an effusive creator. I am so blessed to have been able to call her a friend and I miss our easy and genuine back and forth exchange of cat memes, spiritual stuff, ideas, and art world hot goss, etc. I “saw” Hilde finally last week, in a dream while I was sleeping in a bed that she had slept in. She was wearing a coral colored sheath and she was so tall and still. I ran over to her, wrapped my arms around her and gasped, “Hilde! You’re here! I’m so happy to see you! I love you!” Today would be her 41st birthday and I think she might still be here with us, on the periphery of this realm, finding her way to the next place. So please send her love and best wishes for the rest of her journey. I bought these flowers for her the day after she died because the colors reminded me of her true energy as a seeker of beauty and light. #bardo #hildehelphenstein #spiritualseeker #jerrygogosian #rip

Never before has the actual art making gotten this hot at Friday Heaters. @seffaklein uses molten bismuth and woven glass surfaces (think fire blankets) to make her art. Through a chemical and sculpting process uniquely her own she blends these materials to make otherworldly textures and images.
