The NALSAR Queer Collective set up a stall “Queer Corner” as a part of our university's three day long annual festival Carpe Diem. On offer were mocktails by Mayukha, make-up services by Diya, posters, photographs and art assorted and adorned around the stall by Mahi, Anoushka and Shreya. We were also supported by our alumni & the law firm Nyaya Reeti.

As an integral part of our stall, we also had a Queers –Workers Solidarity Desk. Set up with the assistance of Kranthi, Keerthana, Tara, Samvedh, Sejal, Priyasha, and Sanjeev, this was inspired by Lesbians and Gays Support Miners (LGSM). LGSM was a group of queer people that raised funds in 1984 to support the National Union of Mineworkers during their year-long strike against the conservative Thatcher government's plan to close down unprofitable mines in the UK. In 1984, queers and mining workers found the commonality of their struggles in Thatcher's government's repression of the labour movement and queer movement alike.

Today in 2023, we find it in the precarious nature of our rights, the endless narrative of humiliation permeating every aspect of our lives and the apathy of the institutions towards our plight and suffering.

In the spirit of the work done by LGSM recognizing the interconnectedness of the struggles of all the oppressed as well as the centrality of unionization to workers’ struggles worldwide, the NQC sought to raise funds to support our contract workers in their efforts to unionize and fight their battles on their own without having to perennially rely on student saviours. As Kranthi's research has shown, contract workers in NALSAR are paid below minimum wages and denied weekly offs, overtime payment, paid leaves, national and religious holidays and maternity benefit. Our desk at the Queer Corner collected money through the means of UPI and cash payments, yet much more is required. We are looking to raise 290 rupees per worker (110 workers initially) to register them as members in one of the existing trade unions in Hyderabad and then support them in their work towards establishing a union of their own (QR Code on 10th slide).

journey of self.

2021 was a very inspiring year, I chose to inspire myself each day and push myself to have a boundless energy. To all those who don’t know, I moved to the United Kingdom in October, to do my masters at UCA. The journey to get here was a journey worthwhile and the journey thereafter was a journey of it’s own kind of beautiful. I have been dreaming of moving out of my house, live independently and explore the journey of self for the longest time and 2021 made that happen for me. We are here, besides I want to take this moment and tell you that growth can be uncomfortable but that discomfort is what we need to be where we wish to get. I chose to dive deeper into knowing myself and my art each day, this year. I wanted to be more mindful of the art I am creating in addition to how it impacts the world outside. I wanted to step out of my comfort zone moreover make art that matters, to me and everyone around. The were days when I was uncomfortable with growing, that taught me to live, breathe and embrace all that there is. Trust yourself, do what brings you joy, keep thriving, keep moving, set your goals, realise and work towards those goals, take unexpected turns and directions and above all have faith in the universe of what it shall bring to you because whatever happens only works out for the best and helps you connect with your highest self. I am grateful for each one of you who have pushed me, motivated to make more art, keep doing what I love the most throughout the years of growing and exploring this journey with me. I want to welcome another year of art, growth, uncomfortable steps, having faith that whatever comes to me and I know I shall have you all as my family by my side to appreciate my art and help me become a kinder, compassionate and a better soul each passing day. Light and love to you all. Sunflowers and sunshine. ✨❤️
