This is Kantamanto, upcycled.

Designed and remanufactured by 2025 upcyclers of the Obroni Wawu October (OWO) School. Every look showcased at @obroniwawuoctober Festival is secondhand, sourced by the upcyclers expert eyes, heart and mind from Kantamanto Market, where 15 million garments end up every week.

The students, working in seven collaborative groups transformed these secondhand clothes, adding value back into clothes originally made by big fashion brands… brands whose true production volumes remain a mystery. While they continue to produce without accountability, these upcyclers are doing the real work; slowing down clothing waste, and proving what true creativity and responsibility look like.

Certain brands appeared again and again from the clothes selected for upcycling. That repetition says something. So let’s call on them to #SpeakVolumes and disclose how much clothing they produce.

Presenting the first group of upcyclers for this year’s OWO School Fashion Exhibition: The Flavour of Upcycling. ♻️

These participants for the last 3 months have been learning and transforming second-hand textiles and materials from Kantamanto into something new, from leather, to denim, to dresses.

👞 Glory Adom Unique, creates new leather from old bags. 6 years in Kantamanto and still crafting daily.

👕 Samuel Gyasi, reworks denim, leather, and canvas into bold, experimental designs. And has been working in Kantamanto for a year and moving.

👗 Ellen Sakyibea, a seamstress now an upcycler, has been transforming men’s shirts and bedsheets into timeless pieces.

For them, Kantamanto isn’t just a market, it’s their home, life, and endless creativity. 🧡

Come and explore their collections at OWO Festival 2025, this Sunday, 26th October at Rawlings Park, Accra at 10AM.
