New 12” release out this week on Whiskey Disco with one of my all time DJ hero’s and oldest friends in the game, the mighty Selekta Chang. We first met around 1997 after I somehow finagled my way onto the DJ scene in Gainesville. I have dozens of rave flyers from the 90’s including our names, sometimes right next to each other. Chang was the best. The photo of us is the first time he invited me to play with him at our friend Jessica Richardson’s birthday party (RIP Jess!). I recall how much that meant to me. We’ve remained friends through all the years, nearly 30 now but who’s counting. He came to stay with me a couple years ago and we fired up a couple tracks. I stuck the mic in front of his mouth and insisted he shout something. “Shake Your Body!” Far from the deepest thing Chang ever said, it was enough to pass through the Vocoder and we were off to acid disco land. I think “In the Desert” came before that. We turned out a few versions pretty quickly. It was only a day or two later when we sent the demos to Laurin and he decided to give it a green light. Who should do the remix? Dan Tyler we said. How about this person, or that person, or this other person? Dan Tyler we said. Would Dan do it? “Sure, sounds like a couple of old goats that know what they’re doing!” was his pitch perfect reply to our request. He delivered MEGA. Not a remix, but three. Each one progressively more insane than the next, until he couldn’t stand it and had to fire up his own 808 for the final mix. Dan is a true master of his craft. Commanding space echos, filters, reverbs and mixer knobs like nobody else on the planet. It was a dream come true to hear him apply the process to one of our songs. Truly. I played his 808 mix on Saturday night at the OM Campout and was’t prepared for the shapeshifting, expressive dancing and guttural howls coming from the dancers, but there it was. I’m happy to finally announce that you can pick up the record as of this week on Juno and other fine shops in coming days.
