🔵Exciting announcement!🔵 Please join us on Saturday, October 24th at 12:30 pm for the panel discussion "What Power Does an Image Hold?" as part of the @collectivefutures.info symposium "Parallel Play" in person at Asian Arts Initiative! 🔵 Panelists: Beandrea July @beandreadotcom / Bee Knight @selfbybee / Preetika Rajgariah @prajgariah / Sarah Mueller @sarahcinephile / Stephanie Bursese @stephaniebursese , and Stephanye Watts @bereelblackcinemaclub 👥 Free to attend and open to all! Registration link in @collectivefutures.info bio 🔵 This interactive panel features an experimental structure that includes a live presentation, artist-to-artist conversation, and intimate dialogue with the audience. Our discussion will explore the power dynamics images embody—specifically in visual art and media (film, photography, painting, etc.)—that raise questions about labor in the arts, disrupt systems of value, and lift individual stories that lack representation. Featuring perspectives from visual artists (currently or formerly members of artist collectives and/or collaboratively built spaces), cultural organizers (individuals whose practice is defined by creating social experiences to uplift a community), and curators (individuals whose practice is defined by working directly with filmmakers to present stories that resonate with their audiences and build movements)—this group sees collective visioning and collaborative storytelling as foundational to their practice. Topics to be explored include unlearning harmful practices around cost and time, weaving and nourishing interdependent ecosystems in Philadelphia and beyond, community care and solidarity under capitalism. Accurate labels are not purity tests. They respect bisexual and pansexual identity, lesbian boundaries, reader consent, and the marginalized love stories sapphic spaces were built to hold. When male-centered stories enter sapphic spaces under vague or misleading marketing, they take space from books centered on women and nonbinary people loving each other. Black, Indigenous, and other POC sapphic authors and characters already face deeper barriers, especially when their stories center multiple intersectional identities. We don’t need to make it easier for the industry to suppress them. I will say it once, and once only. I will not entertain conversations about what counts as a sapphic book with anyone who has not decentered men and isn’t actively working to dismantle white supremacy. It is also no coincidence that, as we head into Sapphic September, the discourse about what constitutes a sapphic book has come around yet again. We saw the same thing happen at the beginning of Pride. It’s a calculated move to decenter sapphic identities and intersectional sapphic stories. #sapphicbooks #sapphicromance #discourse #sapphicbookstagram

Announcing five new additions to our Board of Directors! In late April 2026, Vox Populi launched an open call for new members to join our Board of Directors. We were inspired by the thoughtful, enthusiastic response from our community mand grateful to everyone who took the time to apply. We are thrilled to announce the newest members of the Vox Populi Board of Directors: Bee Knight, Emily Zimmerman, Nick Hunsicker, Ryan LaFollette and Sona Diallo! Collectively, they bring experience across the arts, nonprofit leadership, community organizing, communications, affordable housing, design, education, and cultural work. We are excited to welcome this incredible group as we continue strengthening our mission, supporting our artist collective, and building a vibrant future for artist-run culture in Philadelphia.
