POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Selim’s Nkae: Remembrance explores memory as something carried across generations.

The figure’s body becomes a surface for symbols and inherited knowledge. The Adinkra Sankofa on her arm points to the importance of looking back, not simply to remember the past, but to recover what remains valuable and carry it forward.

Beside it, an open eye suggests vigilance and remembrance. It watches over what must not be forgotten, while the cowries across her body connect her to histories of survival, ancestry, and strength.

The basket she carries holds another kind of inheritance. It represents the labour, prayers, sacrifices, and resilience passed from one generation to another.

Rather than presenting remembrance as simply looking back, Nkae considers it as an active responsibility. What we inherit from those before us can become something we protect, carry, and pass on.

Future Heir

Marked by the wisdom of ancestors and the vision of tomorrow, Future Heir stands as a bridge between memory and possibility. His skin bears the sacred codes of tradition, while futuristic glasses frame his gaze, symbols of sight that transcends time. He embodies continuity, resilience, and rebirth: a reminder that heritage does not fade, it transforms and carries us forward into the future.

The Sound We Inherited

Some wounds are healed by words. Others are healed by rhythm. Passed through generations, the drum carries more than sound. It carries memory, belonging, and the pulse of those who came before us. With every strike, the unseen becomes felt, offering comfort, strength, and renewal to those who listen.
In its rhythm lives something older than memory, a reminder that music has the power to heal, unite, and carry us through what words alone cannot.

Reaching with Roots

A young boy reaches toward a window opening onto the infinite cosmos, a glimpse of dreams that stretch beyond what he has known. Beside him stands his mother, steady in her love and quiet in her strength. She does not pull him back, nor does she close the window. Instead, she knows when to protect his dreams and when to let them find their own light.

Her guidance is not meant to restrain ambition, but to give it the space to grow. She is the root that steadies him, creating the confidence to reach beyond the familiar without forgetting where he began.

In this moment, the work reminds us that our greatest possibilities are born where the wisdom of those who came before us meets the courage to imagine what comes next.

Meet Selim, aka @seligrey_ , is a digital collage artist based in Accra. His work blends Afrofuturism and Surrealism, using manipulated photography, abstract forms, texture, and colour to explore identity as fluid, evolving, and future-facing.

Drawing from everyday life, personal memory, history, movies, and imagined futures, his practice reflects on African narratives through layered symbolism and recontextualised imagery. His works explore identity, culture, and possibility, moving between beauty and tension while engaging contemporary social realities.

Through these visual worlds, he reimagines African stories as expansive, self-defined, and unbound by expectation.

@seligrey_ had his solo exhibition with us last April! Have you bought any of his pieces yet?

Behind the Brightness

Outwardly we shine, smiling, stylish, alive.
But beneath the glow is a silence few acknowledge.
The cowrie over the eye ties us to heritage and history, yet also to a harsh truth: in many Black communities, mental health is dismissed,
ignored, or mistaken for weakness.
This piece holds the weight we hide
behind beauty, and the sorrow light cannot erase.

@seligrey_ talks us through’Racing Dreams’ lock in to find out more!

In a country where dreams die, a young version of
my cousin is playing his childhood game using sticks
to push a tire along the dusty road.
At this point in our lives where we dream BIG, we
aspire to be successful in careers which, back then
were not deemed profitable and we were advised
against them.
I remember my aunt telling me she was able to draw
very well but based on the conditions and limitations
of the country in the 80’s you wouldn’t dare pursue
such dreams. The headlamp represents the light
leading the way to my dreams but the conditions in
Ghana are not favourable to help him reach his
dreams.
