Why have I not explored Ballina much before?! 😍
AD | I was invited to spend 24 hours in Ballina, and it genuinely ended up being one of those trips where I wanted to keep exploring long after the work bit was done!

The collaboration brought me to Ballina, but I can honestly say, after spending a few days exploring, I genuinely have even more I want to share outside of the initial collaboration.

I loved the mix of independent shops, beautiful old architecture, history, great food and the fact that there’s so much to do without having to travel far.

@heydayballina was a brilliant base for it all, so central. Scrupulously clean, fully equipped kitchen & lovely shared communal space - will 100% visit again
@billyspizza_ is not only super photogenic but the sourdough was unrivalled. Up there with some of the best pizza in the west! Controversial but I loved the one without the cheese - just the freshest tomatoes, oregano & basil 🫶

Lastly @harboursup for some SUP - Mikee gave us a fab lesson. Sharing his tips & tricks, his passion & knowledge were infectious. And even treated us to a brownie after 🥹 sweetest guy! He operates from both Ballina & Enniscrone, so drop him a message and he’ll work with you!

My heart is full after that stay, such a joy meeting the lovely town folk & business owners. I never take this work for granted & I never promote something I didn’t genuinely love so do support these guys when you visit 🫶

Today I spent the day with @aislingowensnash and @sellonsocialm , and it was exactly what I needed.

If I’m honest, the tech side of creating content has never been my favourite part of running a business. But I’ve realised that if I want to step into the next level of my business, I need to understand every part of it, even the parts that feel uncomfortable.

Today reminded me that learning doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s simply about being in the right room with the right people, who explain things in a way that just makes sense.

I left feeling inspired, excited, and so much clearer.

I know, deep in my heart, why I’m doing this work. I believe in it with every part of me. Now it’s about communicating that message clearly so it reaches the people who need it most.

That’s why I reached out to Aisling and Louise, and I’m so grateful I did.

This is just the beginning. My message is becoming clearer, my confidence is growing, and I know this work is going to make a difference.

When I was seven, my friends would run off to the wooded area at school. It was a huge part of playtime, full of adventure for everyone else. But it wasn’t accessible for me. My friends tried to include me, they really did, but the space itself just shut me out.

I felt like I was the problem, a burden even. I thought I just wasn’t able, not enough. It took me years to unlearn that false belief. My impairment doesn’t disable me, society does. That’s the real barrier.

This understanding is what drives Expanding Horizons. We create spaces where real stories like mine are heard. It shifts the conversation from fixing the person to fixing the system.

Because disabled people are experts in their own lives. When that expertise is truly valued, real change begins.

You know that feeling when a tradesman comes to your house and starts explaining something you already understand?
You’re standing there thinking, I know this. I’m not clueless.
Many women know that moment.
Now imagine that same situation, but you’re also a wheelchair user.

Growing up, and well into my adult life, I was often infantilised. People speaking over me. People assuming I didn’t understand. Sometimes it felt like people saw three things in order.
First a woman. Then disabled. Then a disabled woman.
And somewhere in that mix came the quiet assumption: “Sure what would she know.”
That kind of thinking quietly locks you out of rooms before you even get to the door.

So in May 2024 I decided to try something different.
What if disabled people led the conversation?
We pulled together a small symposium on a shoestring in the @maryrobinsoncentre in Ballina. That night people sat and listened as disabled people spoke about our lives, our barriers, and our ideas for change.
That night Expanding Horizons was born. Because when disabled women speak, people start to see things differently.

This International Women’s Day, remember this.
Disabled women are not invisible. We are leaders, thinkers, organisers and change-makers.
Sometimes the world just needs to listen a little better.
