POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I came to Berlin because there was a war and someone here gave me a job. That’s it. It wasn’t a dream. It wasn’t one of those stories people tell about always wanting to live abroad. It was simply the opportunity that appeared when our world was falling apart.

I spent almost five years trying to convince myself this city was for me. I defended it more times than I can remember. Every winter I said, “Love, next summer it’ll finally click.” Every summer I said, “Let’s give it one more winter.”

It never happened.

Maybe Berlin and I simply never had chemistry. It happens.

I won’t miss paying taxes for a dog while cats apparently enjoy diplomatic immunity. I won’t miss paying for public television and radio I never used. I definitely won’t miss sending three different letters just to prove I was leaving so someone could maybe stop charging me for things six months from now. And if this plane lands before my Abmeldung is processed, honestly, that’s between Germany and Germany.

But here’s the part I wasn’t expecting.
Somehow, in a city I never completely understood, we found people I’ll probably spend the rest of my life trying not to lose.
People who saw us become a family. People who was there without being asked. People who became home while I kept insisting Berlin never would.

Funny how life works.

I’m writing this somewhere above Europe and I’m realizing that before leaving I repeated the same sentence to almost everyone in these photos. And to the ones who aren’t here because Instagram thinks twenty pictures are enough to summarize five years.

You’ll always have a seat at my table.
I have no idea where that table will be next.

I only know that if we’re lucky enough to cross paths again, you’ll never have to ask if you’re invited.
