There’s a part of coaching that doesn’t get talked about enough. You spend years watching people grow. You see their strengths before they recognize them. You watch them fight through insecurity, bad days, losses, injuries, fear, and frustration—and eventually you get a glimpse of the person they’re capable of becoming. And once you’ve seen that person, it’s hard to unsee them. That’s why it hurts when someone starts settling. When the fire gets quieter. When “I want this” slowly becomes “maybe someday.” When they begin accepting less from themselves—not because they aren’t capable, but because staying comfortable became easier than continuing to grow. As a coach, I can teach. I can encourage. I can hold you accountable. Sometimes I can push you harder than you think you want to be pushed. I can remind you of every hard thing you’ve already overcome. But I can’t want your goals more than you do. And maybe that’s the hardest lesson for someone who genuinely cares about the people they coach: you can believe in someone with your whole heart and still not be able to walk the road for them. So when I’m hard on you, understand where it comes from. It isn’t disappointment in who you are. It’s because I’ve seen glimpses of who you could become—and I care too much to pretend I don’t see you settling for less. Sometimes a coach’s job isn’t to tell you how good you’re doing. Sometimes it’s to remind you who you said you wanted to become.
