ANCESTRAL MIGRATION OF THE KHMER GAT CHEN - KDMV

This screenshot does not do any justice for the real map. For the best experience, I’d recommend using a laptop or desktop.

Working with Bong @sokaiyoon on a collaboration like this was a total goal finally achieved… We’ve been friends for 6 years & a collaboration was always a dream but it’s hard when you are connecting with someone across the country!

Being asked to work with him on KDMV & then seeing his Kampuchea Krom map, I was inspired to make a similar one based on my book “Khmer Gat Chen - Southern Chinese Diaspora in Cambodia”.

There are awesome features that I proposed but he surprised me with so many more. In this map you can view where each of the five Chinese groups (Cantonese, Hakka, Hokkien, Hainanese, Teochew) immigrated to in Cambodia. Why each one arrived over time, a survey of historical events that took place during this eras & more.

There’s false narratives out there that “the Khmer Gat Chen were all taken out during the genocide” (we weren’t) or “the Khmer Gat Chen are overdeveloping Sihanoukville today” (we aren’t)— the newcomers from mainland China are Mandarin speaking foreigners who are nothing like our forefathers. Our ancestors arrived in Cambodia & did their best to learn Khmer language, start businesses/trade & assimilate into Cambodian society. This is something I will always preach & have no shame to educate the youth about! Learn the differences & get your facts straight guys. This map backs up all our “claims”, giving historical evidence in the form of clear visuals & easy to digest information if my book is not your cup of tea.

Awkon chran Bong Sokai!! This map has a huge function & purpose. We are helping the next generation to get the information they may need so discussions don’t go haywire.

I’ve added the map at the top of my Linktree in my bio but again, I highly recommend using a laptop/desktop to open it & check out!
