We’re 10 days away from our shoot! Check out our progress! 1. We managed to collaborate with @tanzihao__ to construct a new language for our film. 2. @moonkitaa hosted our script reading sessions. 3. We went back and forth sungai congkak for our location recce. 4. @juju.icesan collaborated with us for our wardrobe. 5. We tested the makeup and sfx look. 6. Prop hunting with @j.__.r 7. @yury.tum helped us with the head bust. 8. @merdekarya hosted us for a crowdfunding

I feel honored to have been given the opportunity to direct @ocbc_my first Raya film, “Di Samping Ayah.” What attracted me about the story was this line, “Bila lagi ayah boleh peluk anak ayah.” I started to see the visual, the mood & the music. The inspiration for the film came from a real life event that occurred to the copywriter, @arsyaddimyati during the morning of Raya. His father uttered the line while fixing his kain samping. 3 months later his father passed away. Ramadan is the month for reset, reflection & rebirth. Raya is the day we celebrate our achievements. Those little changes we’ve made during Ramadan. Bukan lah next day terus jadi alim ke apa. So this is the basis of the story how Amin while transitioning to adulthood gets pedoman (wisdom) from the father, walaupun Ayah dia garang doesn’t know how to show his love. The act of fixing his son’s kain samping during Raya morning is his first step to be close to him. Breaking that Asian parents stereotype. When I cast the talents, my first impression is to look at their eyes & listen to the voice. First, how they use the eyes / gaze to convey emotion or internal monologue without dialogue. Second, their voice tone. And I think we made the right choice when we picked Azri Iskandar & @zairiaaziz . They’re brilliant actors. During the filming of the fixing kain samping scene, when I watched them on the monitor even without listening to the lines terus rasa sebak & it was never our intention to make people cry pun. They acted with their eyes & bila berdialog tone suara sedap. I can go on and on lah macam uncle tulis caption panjang2. But I’d like to thank everyone who involved in this Raya commercial. To the client Anne & her team from OCBC, Eddy & creative team from agency MBCS MY, thank you for giving me this opportunity (walaupun tengah skit gigi ni). I really appreciate it. I think we’re all somewhat sentimental. And I’ve always been a romantic. I don’t always admit it but I do love our country. When I learnt about Khazanah’s initiative to restore Carcosa Seri Negara & Bangunan Sultan Ahmad Samad, I felt a surge of pride, responsibility, and anticipation. But also a nagging question of “why?” In some ways, this film reflects that journey.
