All I think about is you & this day, you were so wild & free. 🤍

I find myself referencing you daily while seeing patients.

I see you running in my dreams nightly.

Your presence will forever live in our hearts and home (and terrorize Ophie).

We love you now & endlessly, Paps. 🫶🏽

You can probably tell by my tone that this is a topic I am quite passionate about. The veterinary industry is in crisis mode. For years there has been a massive shortage of veterinarians and veterinary support staff which was only made worse by the great pandemic pet boom. Owners are frustrated because they can’t get their pets in to see their vet (sometimes even when it’s an emergency) and vets are over worked and struggling to keep their heads above water, leading to a mental health crisis.

Despite this, the supply of vets has remained static for years. Canada’s five colleges of veterinary medicine (yes, we ONLY have 5) graduate about 350 vets annually which is not nearly enough. Every year, more vets retire than graduate further adding to the problem. Did you know that the ratio of pet to vet in Canada is ~2000 to 1?! No wonder it’s so hard to get an appointment.

The obvious answer to this problem would be to create more spaces in existing veterinary schools and build new schools in provinces that don’t have one yet (such as British Columbia). But the reality is this costs money and it is simply not on the government’s list of priorities. The veterinary industry can beg and plead all we want for change but at the end of the day we are a small group with a small voice.

This is where you come in. Power comes with numbers and the numbers are with the PET OWNERS. It is my opinion change won’t come until pet owners step up and take a more active role in advocating for their pets’ veterinary care. If you think are frustrated because you can’t get in to see your vet or think the wait times at the ER are ridiculous don’t just complain about it - DO SOMETHING. Contact your government and voice your concerns. Demand better veterinary care including vet to pet ratios. Help US help YOU.

Guilt is such a common feeling after we lose a pet. Here is our take on the topic. We think that some of the best pet parents experience this🤍 despite giving their pet their all. Have you experienced this? What helped you?
