Wisps of sunlit clouds as the warm summer sun begins its restful decline for the night.

Early 20th century scientist and polymath John Lubbock was so correct when he said: “Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.”

I hope you can find rest on these summer days; rest from the things that trouble our world collectively, and trouble your life personally. There seems no end to grief and pain, but the constancy of nature can be a soothing balm. The flourishing of summer beauty calms the soul. Blessings to you on this summer day.

This is a beautiful golden-yellow Marsh-Marigold, growing in marshy grasses near the Grand River. It’s a member of the buttercup family. I got wet stepping close to take the picture. It was worth it. Wild flowers are an unconditional gift of beauty. I feel blessed to be in their presence.

Amateur naturalist Susan Fenimore Cooper (1813-1894) expressed a similar sentiment when she said:

“How lavishly are the flowers scattered over the face of the earth! One of the most perfect and delightful works of the Creation, there is yet no other form of beauty so very common. Abounding in different climates, upon varying soils — not a few here to cheer the sad, a few there to reward the good but countless in their throngs, infinite in their variety, the gift of measureless beneficence wherever man may live, there grow the flowers.”

How beautifully stated! Stay well friends, through these ongoing Covid times, war in Europe, economic and racist divides, and climate upheavals. It’s not easy.

Yet through these all, we have beauty around us:

in the people we love and are loved by,

in our extra-human companions that love us unconditionally,

and in ourselves, who, in our finest essence, are creatures of loving compassion and wisdom.

Be kind to yourself. Forgive yourself, and move on. Live richly the precious life you have, with every breath you take.

A glorious evening sunset, reminding us to rest. And in our resting, let’s not forget the beauty and goodness that lives in and around us, in spite of the presence of death and destruction. Don’t lose faith in human nature. As Mahatma Gandhi said: “Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.” It is most often external circumstances that destroy the good at the core of human nature. Evil acts beget evil acts. An “eye for an eye” makes the whole world blind. And in the age of nuclear weapons, an eye for an eye could significantly diminish life on our fragile blue planet. Militarization and zealous patriotism make a poisonous brew. Compromise and cherishing life make for peace. Be kind friends. Love with all your heart. Keep hope, and cherish life; your own and all life around you.

Finding beauty in the sunrise of a wintry day. We all need to find colour, light, and love in each new day, especially when so much anger, sadness, and grievance is in us, and around us. We need music, art, and love, to lift us up, repeatedly, out of the temptation to despair; to generate hope that better days lie ahead, just as the rising sun dispels the dark in every new day. In Hermann Hesse’s magnificent little novel, entitled “Siddhartha,” the Buddha-to-be, Siddhartha, says: “I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value.” Stay safe friends, as we drag ourselves out of this pandemic. Cases are coming down. More people are getting vaccinated, and scientists are working long hours, everywhere, ingeniously developing new vaccines for the next round of microbial battles. As well, tens of millions of vaccines are being distributed around the world. The key, for us, now, is to stay centred in the best parts of our fragile human nature; recognizing and accepting our hurts and pains, while empathizing each day more deeply with the hurts and pains of others; that is, to grow our humanity. Stay safe, be kind, be strong, be unyielding and tenacious in the holy task we all struggle with, to infuse a depth of meaning into each new day; to transform “it into something of value,”for ourselves, and others.

The blinds in my room were glowing orange this morning. This is why. I took it as a message of hope, that warmer weather will come, and Covid will recede into the background, sooner than later. Meditation teacher Tara Brach says: “Attention is the most basic form of love. By paying attention we let ourselves be touched by life, and our hearts naturally become more open and engaged.” Take care friends. Better days are ahead. Stay hopeful. Pay attention to beauty around you, and in you. Be kind to yourself, and to others, as we ride out this final pandemic wave (hopefully). Pandemic ➡️ endemic is on the way (let’s hope).
