Mandarin Duck

Unlike typical ducks that nest on the ground, Mandarin ducks build their homes in tree cavities, often using old woodpecker nests. When the ducklings are just a day old, the mother flies to the ground and calls out to them. The tiny, fluffy ducklings must make death-defying leaps of up to 30 feet from the nest to the forest floor without getting hurt.

Flamingo (3)

A group of flamingos is called a flamboyance. Other collective nouns for flamingos include stand, colony and pat…. but really, who wouldn’t want to be part of a stylish Flamboyance.

Flamingo legs actually bend just like human legs. What looks like a flamingo’s knee is really its ankle joint. A flamingo’s knees are located higher up the legs, hidden by the body and feathers. Think of a flamingo as standing on its tiptoe. When the leg bends, it’s the ankle you see hinging.

The etymology of the word ‘flamingo’ is not established. Some believe it came from the Spanish word flamenco (noting the similarities between flamenco rhythm and the synchronized and rhythmic behavior of flamingos when they are in flight). According to another camp, the word is derived from the Portuguese word ‘falameng’ (meaning ‘flame-colored’).

Owl Leader

Whipped up a quick shadowbox as a thanks from our little Troop to their Camp Counselor who tirelessly kept us from getting lost in the physically or metaphorically in the woods all week.

Parrot Badge (3)

The Troop have been having a fun time with these side games and finding one each morning. Thankfully everyone has gotten a bird in the process

Found some random paint marks on a picnic table and felt the need to finish a pattern I saw between the grain.

Zebra Finch
Fun Fact: Despite their small size, Zebra Finches are highly intelligent birds capable of problem-solving, recognizing patterns, and even understanding basic numerical concepts.
Studies have shown they learn their songs in a way similar to how humans learn language. Young finches go through a “babbling” stage before mastering their song, just like human babies learning to talk.

Fun fact: Starlings don’t shed their feathers twice a year. Instead, they grow dark, iridescent feathers with bold white tips in the fall, which creates their famous speckled appearance. By spring, those white tips wear away completely, leaving them solid, glossy, and metallic-dark
