The number one question 😅

Van lifers: how long do you plan on living in a van?

This question always baffles us. As if our lives are something we’re just checking off a box. It’s as if we’re expected to plan for something more stable and conventional in the eyes of other rather than enjoying the life we’ve been working towards for years. Rather than living in the present of what we are so grateful to have.

When we were living in an apartment before this, nobody ever asked “so how long are you going to live in an apartment for?”

When we were in the early stages of beginning van life, we came up with an answer for our friends and family just to appease them.

“Five years.” We said.

Over a year into van life, we’ve forgotten that number. It was never a timeline for us. We take life day by day, and now when people ask us the question, our response is “for as long as our bodies let us.”

How do we afford van life?👇🏻

📩 send this to your van life daddy

So why isn’t Scott working?
• we were planning for van life for 5+ years. We were working two jobs, saving + investing money (& lived with my parents for 14 months before we started)
• we went into van life debt free
• Scott was originally supposed to be working seasonally in National Parks
• after I got diagnosed with cancer, he had to turn down his original job in Glacier National Park while we put van life on hold
• we prioritized budgeting & tracking monthly expenses
• when I started working full time again, we kept track of everything and got strict with our spending to see if we could make one income work
• we realized with Scott committing to seasonal work in the National Parks, that would land-lock us somewhere for 6 months at a time (and what good is life in a National Park if Floyd can’t come hiking with us?)
• since we missed out on over a year of life because of a$$hole cancer, we decided we could live off one salary and our savings for at least a year to travel and experience more and then reevaluate

👉🏻And real talk: it’s SO nice that Scott hasn’t been working. Van life chores take up so much time and the fact that I don’t really have to deal with them after I finish work for the day is enormous. He cooks, he cleans, he handles van repairs & maintenance, he drives us everywhere, it really doesn’t get much better than that.

Let’s give it up for all the van life zaddiessss🙌🏻🙌🏻

“What do you do all day living in a van?”

We get this question often, so here are the raw, unfiltered moments throughout a day of van life.

🌞Morning
We usually do wake up in some amazing places. We often spend a week to 10 days living off grid before we need to re-up on water, groceries & gas. (Our heat&hot water run off our fuel).

🌞 I’m on east coast hours for work, so I can usually sign off for the day around 2pm. And I get lots of snuggles from Floyd throughout my work day🧡

🌞 Off grid living is one of our favorite aspects of van life, but finding provisions can sometimes take hours, depending on how far away we are from town.

🌞 Whether it’s going for a run down a dirt road, doing yoga outside the van, or finding a short hike, we find a way to move our bodies every day.

🌚 We don’t always have service & we have limited WiFi in the van, so we often read, write, or edit photos & videos at night. Scott’s always on dinner duty while I map out our upcoming routes & hikes.

🌚 TV is a treat, we don’t watch it every night. We read a lot, but this week we’re binging some trashy reality TV because that’s our guilty pleasure. (the Ultimatum, anyone?)

🌚 Scott was so excited for the new moon and the meteor shower. We had clear skies and no smoke all week, and the morning of the meteor shower the wind shifted & we woke up to hazy skies.

So, that’s what a normal day looks like living in a van.

Everyone who does van life is different. We personally don’t frequent larger cities, we’ll go out of our way to be more secluded, and we built our van to be off grid capable for as long as possible because to us, that’s part of the reason we love this lifestyle🧡

What do you think? Was this what you were expecting? How does this differ from your every day living?

And today we’re walking around an industrial park while our van is in the shop

But what does “conventional” living look like?

4 years ago our apartment building caught on fire & we were displaced from our home for 3 months.

My friend just spent $20,000 on a partial home renovation and a week later her boiler blew out.

✨Here’s a little journal entry:
Absent from the confines of four walls and the chatter of coworkers, my days linger, spacious like childhood. Lunch breaks have become like recess again. Instead of hurriedly eating lukewarm leftovers while scrolling my phone, I wander along unmarked dirt roads where the sun is my clock. Floyd stops every few feet to inspect another scent before he sprints his way back to me, kicking up dirt beneath his padded paws. Time passes slowly, not like waiting for scan results, but like silt settling, grain by grain, into the clear bed of the nearby river.

Van life problems are inevitable, just like every other living situation. But the pros outweigh the cons every damn day 🫶🏻
