Jazz Lovers : “Watch Out” is the debut album by saxophonist René McLean, released in 1975 on the SteepleChase label.

The album features seven tracks, primarily composed by McLean, with contributions from guitarist Nathan Page, pianist Hubert Eaves III, and McLean’s father, Jackie McLean.
Recorded on July 9, 1975, at C.I. Recording Studios in New York City, the album blends elements of hard bop and avant-garde jazz.

AllMusic reviewer Scott Yanow noted that while René McLean did not yet have a distinctive voice at the time, he showed significant potential, and the sextet’s style hints at avant-garde innovations while remaining closer to the style of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.

“Watch Out” stands as a testament to René McLean’s early development as a jazz artist, showcasing his versatility across multiple reed instruments and his ability to collaborate with seasoned musicians.
